Laugarvatn Fontana is composed of a series of interconnected baths and steam rooms that complement each other to create a healthy, natural and unique spa experience.Three steam rooms, collectively called GUFAN, have been built over a natural hot spring that has been used since 1929. The temperature of the steam varies depending on the temperature of the hot spring and weather, usually between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F). Humidity is very high in the steam room cabins. Grids in the floor of the steam rooms allow guests to hear and smell the boiling natural hot spring underneath, creating a natural and totally unique experience.Next to the steam room is YLUR, a Finnish-style sauna. The temperature is between 80°C (176°F) and 90°C (194°F), with a lower humidity than the steam room having a big window facing the lake of Laugarvatn. LAUGA, SÆLA, and VISKA are interconnected outdoor mineral baths that vary in depth, size and temperature. Some areas are suitable for relaxation and others offer space for movement and playfull moments. Stone artwork made by Icelandic artist, Erla Thórarinsdóttir, enhance each visitor’s experience. VISKA, the hot tub, is built at a slightly higher level than the other baths, providing a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings while the healthy water nourishes both body and soul.Completing the ensemble are VATNIÐ and STRÖNDIN — the lake and the beach. Visitors will reach VATNIÐ through a gate. STRÖNDIN has warm black sand, which has been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from arthritis and other joint illnesses. VATNIÐ provides an opportunity to cool down between visits to GUFAN and YLUR, a temperature shift that is both healthy and strengthening

We came here as part of our Warm Baths, Cool Lights Tour with Icelandic Excursions Tour Company (who I highly recommend). Things to keep in mind: 80 km outside Reykjavik, this is a local favorite thermal bath spot; unlike the more famous location (Blue Lagoon) outside of Reykjavik, this thermal spa has the real geothermic heat to heat them (the other... I actually enjoyed this hot spring experience more than the Blue Lagoon. It was less crowded, less expensive, and it also had access to jump into the lake of ice. It also had some fantastic steam rooms and saunas.

Absolutely charming, especially after dark, when the water is beautifully lit with underwater lamps. The pools are comfortably warm, perfect for a winter day. There is a dry sauna and a set of steam rooms, as well as access to the lake where on can cool off. The only down-side is that the baths are actually quite small. This is... More

Geothermal baths are part of the icelandic experiance. We went at night during the colder season and still enjoyed it a lot. We got to soak in a beautiful setting while star gazing. A jump into the cold lake is optional!

We booked to do the geothermal oven tour and got to taste the geothermal bread which was lovely. Having booked and arrived independently, we were a bit dismayed to pick up a full coach load of people en route to the ovens and to subsequently struggle to see or hear anything the guide told us because so many people were... The Laugarvatn geothermal baths are easy to reach from the main road. Fontana has different baths with different temperatures. The area is well set-up, all baths are close together. There are also different steam baths and a sauna. Plenty of good showers and clean, spacy dressing rooms. If you are done bathing, you can enjoy a nice (dinner) buffet at... More

Had a lovely relaxing time here. Enjoyed a very tasty buffet meal just before dipping into the warmth of the multiple geothermal baths! Great way to shake off a hangover!!

We stopped here after our Golden Circle tour with my 83-year-old mother. The demonstration of how they bake bread underground was very interesting, and the bread was delicious. Very nice hot spa, steam room, saunas--all naturally heated by the geothermal activity (same as what cooks the bread. Very pretty and relaxing. Would happily do it again.

Clean, nice, good selection of amenities, well organized, friendly staff, not crowded. Fontana has a cafe and free parking. Could be used within a tour or without.

This was my second visit to Fontana spa, and it was very enjoyable. There at 4 pools all with different temperatures, so you can go in the one to your preference. There are also different temperature steam rooms and a sauna, all of which a very nice. Everything over looks the lake and some mountains, so it make for a... More
