*** Alba Iulia - Alba Carolina Citadel *** A town coated by the legendary halo of the great historical events that took place within its ancient walls, Alba Iulia has deeply got into the Romanian people's mind and soul. No other Transylvanian town has gathered so many crucial meanings and symbols. With thousands and thousands of years of human existence lying behind it, Alba Iulia represents the charming mirror in which all the ethnic groups of Transylvania can discover their vigor or their traditions of yore. The heart of Alba Iulia is Alba Carolina Citadel. Alba Carolina, the most representative bastion fortress in Romania and Southeast Europe, built upon the initiative of Emperor Charles the VIth of Habsburg, under the supervision of the French-born Austrian field marshal Eugene of Savoy, is wearing its royal robe. A royal citadel, residence of the bishopric, capital of autonomous principality, and a military garrison, Alba Iulia has been during all historical periods the main political, administrative, religious, cultural, and military centre of Transylvania. We invite you to visit The Other Capital of Romania.

One of the most beautiful locations to visit in Romania. Nicely redone, looks authentic. Take a long walk through the citadel and around it. Looks even better by night.

The citadel is wonderful renovated. It is a place for excellent walks, great photos and glimpse of history wherever you turn your head. Don't miss the 6 gates, the catholic and orthodox churches and the Union Room

It is one of the best rebuilt fortresses form Romania. You have a lot of restored buildings and a museum. Every day the have a small guard change ceremony and you can even see roman legioneare soldiers.

Even if Romania, and Alba Iulia work hard to get more tourists they could benefit from having information translated to English, you would benefit having a local with you. Anyhow, it's nice to walk around and there are historic places and carts that sell "things",...More

Recently restored and it shows. They did a great job. We visited it today at night and liked it so much were going back tomorrow. There's so much to take in that an hour didn't cut it for us.

It was interesting to take a stroll through the old fortified city. It is well maintained and kept. It was very cool to see the Roman excavations even if it was just a tiny area.

I came to Alba Iulia citadel after 10 years and was completely amazed. The renovation that was done here is impressive. I really didn't feel that I was in Romania anymore, the whole place seemed to be from a fairytale.
