We went to visit the old town by foot and were quite grateful to take a ride on this funicular on our way back. The funicular was first opened in 1899, and is powered by an ingenious water system. It really feels like making a...More

The funiculaire is one of Fribourg's main and picturesque attractions. It uses a cable traction to connect the lower 'basse ville' with the town centre higher up and gravity (laden with sewage water) to pull the lower funiculaire cabin upwards.

If you follow the route down and down and down to the famous bridges then you can walk around and catch the funicular back up the hill. Without it we would still be there!

This is a must experience for everyone visiting Fribourg. Taking the Funi will set you back to another time when you enjoy the gentle ride to or from the "vielle ville".

Had a nice morning taking the funicular down to the river then back up to the upper town. Just quaint and makes you smile a bit.

A great experience. Traditional and quick! Having the day card you don't have to pay extra. I felt like a swiss, not like seeing a tourist attraction.

This is a relatively short ride, but a one of a kind funicular. Originally built to carry brewery workers from their homes in old Fribourg to the new brewery at the top of the hill, this funicular runs on waste water. A tank under the...More
