The Custom House is a delight in itself, and especially so in its historic and attractive river location. And it is just one of many such delights along the suggested town walks, mainly between the main car park and the Cathedral. These very uncrowded areas are 100% wrap-around 12th. century-plus Hanseatic buildings through to 18th century sea trading complexes. Few startling single buildings as such, but just a feeling that you're wandering through time and history without a single modern building in sight. Wonderful!

A significant building by the quayside. We were not able to get inside although we are aware there are interesting exhibits. Lots of models of old boats used in the past. On the exterior, building has a glass facade and rather unusual in shape.

I came here many years ago to work on the BBC tv programme 'David Copperfield'. I fell in love with the Custom House then, and was rather sad that it was never seen in all our shots of the quay. The director would have his reasons I suppose - maybe just too iconic - too recognisable? (They're coming back to do a remake I gather - will it get star status this time I wonder?)
Iconic it certainly is, a symbol of the great trading days of this very important Hanseatic port. Perhaps odd that such a pretty building (I can't think of another word) should be associated with the hard-nosed business of collecting revenue.
Whatever else you do in King's Lynn, do not miss this lovely, perfect building in its virtually unspoilt quayside setting!

We went to The Custom House to find some information regarding the town and surrounding area (never having visited before) and were greeted by a woman who seemed to have got out of bed on the wrong side. When we asked about the origins of the name King's Lynn and the meaning of the word Lynn, it was as though we'd asked for the woman's lungs in exchange for the information. SHOCK! HORROR! Her attitude was hostile to the point of rudeness, her body language spelt out disdain and superciliousness and she was a very poor representative of the town. Take a tip, lady. You may not LIKE dealing with people's enquiries, you may not LIKE having to go to the trouble of imparting your superior knowledge, you may not LIKE having to be nice to visitors - but those visitors are among the reasons you earn a living. You are PAID to do these things. If you don't LIKE doing these things, if they are beneath you - then either change your attitude, or - preferably - move on to another job. Gassing badgers would be an ideal career move for you, I'd imagine.

A lot of historical facts to be learnt and being in the centre of the town by the quay, its an easy access.

Downstairs is the tourist office and upstairs, for a modest entry fee, is a small museum. Its okay and takes a few minutes to wander around. Nice views over the harbour and river from upstairs.

Unrelated exhibits that are out of place for a maritime museum. You get precious little for your entrance fee. The interior is dusty and could do with a good clean as well. Nice building, shame about the contents!

The Custom House is beautifully nestled on the Purfleet Quay. It is a very elegant building and an important part of King's Lynn maritime history.

We stumbled across a fair happening one sunny afternoon. The custom house was overflowing on to the square. We grabbed a window seat and watched all the activities, dancing, band playing. Great G&T's

The ground floor of this building is used as the Tourist Information Office whose staff are friendly and helpful. On the upper two floors is a fascinating exhibition about the buildings history which we enjoyed exploring. At only £1 for entrance, it was an informative experience.
