The only thing we knew about Laurence Sterne were his Tristram Shandy books, but haven't read them!!! However ,the curator gave such an informative and enthusiastic talk they are now on our 'to read' list!! We haven't been anywhere where we were given such an interesting and entertaining talk. Shandy Hall is quite small ,only three rooms to see, but... More

Small rooms so restricted numbers but well worth a visit. Lovely garden and nice little gift shop. The curator is superb. Enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Visit the Church over the road. Well worth a visit

We were passing through with friends on our way to Northallerton when we saw the sign for Shandy Hall, so we thought we might make a brief stop. We never got to Northallerton! The gardens are fine, although you could miss the entrance to the wild area if you didn’t know where it was, and as other reviewers have remarked... More

You can only go into Shandy Hall with a guided tour. It does not say this on the website, nor anywhere in the ticket office. So if you have missed one guided tour and do not have a couple of hours to spare to wait for the next one, you will be disappointed. There was another person in the ticket... More

This privately run museum is open to the public between 14:30 and 16:30 on Wednesdays and Sundays only. It's definitely worth while timing your visit to Coxwold accordingly. That's because the "tour guide", Patrick Wildgust, is absolutely excellent: he exudes the immense joy, wonder, humour and erudition so characteristic of Sterne's writing in his comments that, in addition to a... Passionate and expert curator; fascinating church with strong Sterne associations; wonderfully atmospheric literary house; beautiful garden balancing wildlife and formality; attractive exhibition by artist Carry Akroyd

After coming across Shandy Hall on a lovely sunny Sunday drive with my mother and 16 week old daughter, we were tempted by the thought of luscious gardens (it being the last day in August), a plant sale and an art exhibition. It is not often that I am disappointed, especially not enough to add my review to this website,... More

We’re sorry you were charged a child’s entrance fee for a babe in arms – you shouldn’t have been. We are a small organisation with only one permanent member of staff and we otherwise rely on volunteers – our volunteer training seems to have slipped in this case. The very end of August is a time when in the Wild... More

So interesting! V engaging curator who will tell you all about Laurence Sterne, 'inventor' of the English novel if you want to know. But also a centre for exhibitions of contemporary art AND for anyone with an interest in moths. Who would have thought moths could be so interesting? Not me. But they are - at Shandy Hall! Also, beautiful... More

Was taken to Shandy Hall this afternoon by a friend. The tour of the house was fascinating, started outside being given a potted history of the building. Our Guide Philip? who is the curator obviously very knowledgable about Laurence Sterne/Tristram Shandy and brought the book all to life for us. I had absolutely no idea what to expect and was...
