Having arrived a early for an engagement with friends I wandered along to the church. How lovely to find it open. All Covid enhanced as well. The ceiling was an absolute eye opener. Beautiful monuments around the church. Could have spent longer but as I was just filling in the time I had to hastily leave

Lovely old 1600 church in quaint grounds. Inside is a delight. Well worth a walk outside and inside, it’s a fabulous old church

The first reference to ‘The church of Kukefeld’ is in a charter dated around 1092, but the present building dates from the 13th Century. It was extended in the 14th, 15th and 16th Centuries, and then extensively refurbished in the 19th Century. Remodelling of the interior in 2012 created an open, flexible space with furniture of great quality.

The church is clad in Sussex sandstone, some of which may have been quarried locally, and has a magnificent Horsham stone roof (which weighs about 100 tonnes!). The tower is capped by a broached shingle spire dating from 1980, replacing the original, which was destroyed by fire.

The stonework of the windows was largely ‘restored’ by the Victorians, who also left some very fine stained glass windows including four by Charles Kempe and several by Clayton and Bell. Kempe also decorated the ceilings of the chancel and nave.

There are several fine memorials inside the church, including some 16th Century brasses, and the font dates from the 13th Century. Remains of the first church clock, dating from 1667, hang at the bottom of the tower.

The church sits in a beautifully maintained churchyard with magnificent views across the Weald to the South Downs. There are many 17th and 18th Century gravestones, and 22 of them are Grade 2 listed. There is also an unusual wooden rail memorial to Sarah Tulet, a servant of the Sergison family, who died in 1840. Unusually, there are two lychgates, both Grade 2 listed, one designed by Kempe.

To the north of the church is the Old School, which dates from the early 16th Century. It is now used by the church and local community.
