This was probably the toughest of the three hikes I did in El Chalten, especially because it is mainly exposed to the wind (even on a sunny day) and because the trail to get to the top is all uphill. However, once you get there the view is majestic and even on the way you get beautiful spots. In total it was around 24 km. Don’t miss it!!

This hike was one of the hardest, all the way in is up hill so you need to be prepared and have fresh legs for it.
All will be worth it with the stunning view that you will find at the end, I promise
We did this hike with a local guide but the paths are very well marked, there’s no guidance necessary. Just remember to register at the local tourist office that is right at the beginning of the path in order to have a little explanation and report the group of people hiking.
Be prepared with water and a small lunch, remember not to throw away any garbage, be respectful with nature.
All will be worth it with the stunning view that you will find at the end, I promise

To me, the 2 best hikes in ElCh are this one + Cerro Fitz Roy. CFR wins by a hair due to its variety of views and experiences, but this one has stunning views at the top, into the dramatic, glaciated valley between Cerro Torre and C. Fitz Roy/Chalten - if weather permits!
Well worth the medium difficulty, steadily climbing hike (I'm 72, but hike weekly) - and it's all downhill in the afternoon :-)
Do check if you can see the peaks from the town. If it's cloudy and windy, it's not worth the effort, as it can be really blustery on the ridge...

When visiting El Chalten Loma del Pliegue is the trek many visitors don't know about and for this reason the trail is very quiet. However, the trek is by no means less beautiful than the sister trails Laguna Torre & Laguna de los Tres. The climax of this trek takes you to a ridge offering some of the most breathtaking views in all of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. A spectacular vista comprising of the spires of the Fitz Roy Massif, the Torre Glacier, glacial lakes, Cerro Torre and the Patagonian steppes.
Just a couple of things I want to highlight...
The trail starts near the ranger station as you enter El Chalten where the buses stop to let the park rangers give a briefing to visitors. From town centre its about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the start.
It is impossible to get lost on the trail. The trail is well marked and you even receive a map from the park rangers containing all the routes in the park.
Depending on your pace, the trek can take anywhere between 4 and 7 hours to complete round-trip. I started at 1 pm and finished at 6 pm. That included spending two hours at the final Mirador. It was that amazing.
The start of the trail is fairly easy-going & pleasant taking you through woodland and along a canyon. There are sections of exposure to sun and chilly wind. Be sure to pack strong sunscreen and dress appropriately.
The trail ascends less steeply than the more popular Laguna de los Tres, however, has a higher elevation at the finish. From the mid-section of Loma del Pliegue to the end, it is all gradual uphill. The trail will eventually level off at around 1000 meters. For comparison, Laguna de los Tres goes up 800 meters.
Most people upon arrival to El Chalten by bus flock to do Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre and those trails get busy in the first day or two. If you have the luxury of time and are confident the weather forecast will remain stable in the days ahead, do Loma del Pliegue first and the two popular treks later. By doing it this way around, you may find that you will have this trek to yourself and when you get round to the other treks they will be less busy. Furthermore, this way round offer a nice build-up both in views and physical preparation for Laguna de los Tres.
This is Patagonia and the weather won't always go your way but try to pick a clear day for this trek. Due to the elevation and how far away the points of the interest are at the final Mirador this trek is best appreciated in clear weather. At least with Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre, there are low-lying views when its cloudy.
Loma del Pliegue was a magical & unforgettable experience. I was fortunate to have a spell of stable weather and the views were unobstructed. Adding to the drama, it was late October when I went and there was still winter snow on the ground.
Dust off those hiking boots & go.

This was the last of our four walks at El Chalten and a great way to end with the best views of the range as a whole. It has a greater total ascent than the other walks, though most is this is fairly slow and steady climb. This was probably my second favourite of the walks we did, with Laguna de Los Tres as number one - but a very close call between them.

I did the three major walks around El Chalten while I was in town: this one, Laguna Torre, and Laguna de los Tres (Fitz Roy), and I thought the views on this walk were the best by far.
The walk is 10 km one way, with 1000 m elevation gain up to the summit of the hill, but that elevation gain is spread out over the entire 10 km so it is pretty easy walking. This is a good distance for a day walk, 20 km total from the trail head and back. The trial head also gives you the option of going to Los Condores and Las Aguilas if you wish.
The views on this walk were by far the best of the three walks I did. If you start walking before sunrise, you will be able to see the Fitz Roy getting lit up by the morning sun as you walk along the trail. The trail leads you through nice leafy forests, and eventually leads up to a pretty wide flat rocky plain. There are two miradors you can go to. The first is at the base of the final hill, and offers you a good top down view of Laguna Torre and Cerro Torre.
Heading up to the top of the hill, you will get 360 degree panoramic views of the whole area. If you look back towards where you came from, you can see El Chalten in the distance, and clockwise from there is a massive lake, some gorgeous mountains, Cerro Torre, and then Cerro Fitz Roy.
Absolutely gorgeous walk, a must-do.

This trek is so worthwhile. Up at the top, in a clear day, you will have the very best view of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy together in a beautiful angle you just don't achieve from walking up to their respective lagunas.
The hike up is fairly gently all the way to after the forest. It is a gently gradual ascent up to after the forest. Then it becomes a very steep 40 min trek on not so solid gronud some expect some slips here and there. Once at the top the views are simply stunning and you will have some nice training under your belt too! :)
Advertised as a 4h walk (one way) we did it in roughly 3h at slow pace.

The hike up to Loma del Pliegue Tumbado is a lovely gradual climb to a great vista point for looking at Mt Fitzroy and – if you are lucky – Cerro Torre. Don’t drink from the streams lower down, as there are animals grazing. Higher up, in the open rock country, you can drink from the one stream the trail crosses. The last bit is steep, but the views are rewarding even if you don't make it to the very top.

Not many travellers hike this trail which I am thankful for. After trekking to Laguna de los Tres, it was a relief to not have to share this trail with hundreds of others. The hike was more peaceful and I had more of a wilderness experience. The landscape and scenery is amazing along the entire trail. The trail itself is pretty much uphill the whole way, with some sections being steeper than others. The last part to the highest lookout is the steepest, and is quite exposed to the wind. On a clear day you will be able to see Mount Fitzroy and Cerro Torre from this lookout, along with a number of glaciers, lakes and other mountains. To get to the highest lookout, you need to leave the marked trail and head up the mountain about 10 minutes before reaching the lower lookout. The trail up the mountain is less obvious than the main path, but it is marked with piles of rocks at a number of points. For this trek, I suggest taking hiking poles, wearing proper hiking shoes, and choosing a day that is not too windy and cloudy. I found this hike easier than that to Laguna de los Tres because it is shorter and not as steep. I 100% recommend this hike if you have a clear day! The views are definitely nicer on this hike than those at Laguna de los tres!

If you have only one day in El Chalten and it happens to be a clear day, do not hesitate and do this hike. You will get to see mountains most of the way and you will be rewarded at the end with a view of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre with the Laguna.,

Hola Ana! Queria consultarte sobre este trekking, es posible hacerlo por tu cuenta o aconsejas hacerlo en excursión ? Yo no tengo problemas en mandarme con algunos valientes mas desde el hostel por nuestra cuenta, pero desconozco la señalización y dificultad del sendero...vos que me aconsejas?

encuentras seguro, de hecho es mejor que vayas y busques, cuando llegas te das cuenta que lo que aparece en Booking o en hostel world es súper caro. nosotros llevamos y buscamos y encontramos súper fácil. es un pueblo muy pequeño así q no es para nada difícil

Hola! Como dicen calcula entre 6 y 8 horas. Te recomiendo salir temprano (6, 7 am) y en la "ida" ir parando cada 40' o 1 hora parar 15 minutos a descansar un poco las piernas, tomarte algún mate y disfrutar del lugar. La vuelta vas a tardar bastante menos tiempo porque es en bajada siempre. Si podes salir un día despejado mucho mejor!
El sendero esta bien marcado, pero si podes pasa por guardaparques y avisa que vas a hacer este recorrido si no tenes experiencia.

Si, se puede seguir sin inconvenientes! La última parte esta indicado por estacas altas, con el borde superior pintado en amarillo. Siempre vas observando la estaca siguiente. No presenta dificultad.
El sendero a la ida, es siempre ascedente ( en subidita...) Te recomiendo, como para el resto de los senderos, buen calzado de trekking.
La bajada es mucho más facil ( en esta senda). Si el día está lindo, la vista es imperdible!! Es menos concurrido que el de Laguna de los tres.
Observas todo el cordón, si el día te lo permite, no te lo pierdas! Bello!!!!
