It was the key place for me in Easter island. As many connecting the Easter Island wirt the giant scultures, this place showed me indeed the turbulent history of the island. The believes which seized the people and ruling their lives, the serenity of the place, hte grandeusse of the nature of the island. A must.

After the Moai, during a time of climate change on the island affecting food supply, the Birdman ritual came into dominance to reduce strife between the tribes. Very interesting place to see where the competition took place. The crater lake is also interesting.

We had to go back as it was overcast on our first trip up. Islanders say this is the most spiritual place on the island and i can see why. It truly reflects the heavens on a sunny day.

One of the best views of the island, but unfortunately you can visit this site only once with your ticket which is a pity... wait for a sunny day to go there. It's important to get a guide with you able to tell all the stories and legends attached to this location. Unfortunately it's only possible to see a few... More

Lots of people drive here to the top of the volcano, and it features in many tours too. If you're up for it, the 5km walk from town is well worthwhile too. The walk follows what we're told is a traditional path for the birdman ceremony, so you kind of earn your stripes here. Orongo Village is amazing enough from... More

This was on our 1/2 day tour and it was windy up there. Going 300' above sea level to learn the men climbed down and swam across, found an egg and brought it back to the elders unbroken... the story goes on and you will need to take a tour to find out the ending... I recommend one that is... More

Upon reaching this crater you will be in awe with its beauty and knowing the history will make you appreciate it even more. We hung out here for quite a while just staring and enjoying the views and the moment. A little further up from the crater is a building which includes some history and past this building you will... The story of the birdman competition is quite incredible, you will have incredible views over the three islands where they had to swim to, after climbing down the mountain side. To think they built everything here just for this ceremony, including all the dwellings where they stayed and some of the caves is just amazing. I think some of our... More

For such a small island, there is a lot to see in Rapa Nui and the Orongo area is one of the highlights, because you can visit this extinct volcano, with great views over the cauldron and the rest of the island and visit the ancient site where the birdman competition use to be held in ancient times. The housing... More

Our guide took us on a private hike around the volcano and when we got to the edge of the cliff, you can see straight down the coastline with sweeping views and you can truly appreciate the colors of the water, the coastline, and overall beauty of this island...truly memorable.
