"guide mandatory", entrance fee + guide is 20,000 ariary, about 5 euro, which is ridiculous for a small lake. You'll be surrounded with dozens of people trying to sell you stuff. Not worth the effort of going there.

Very deep lake high up in the hills accessible only by car, and then a hike. There is a trail all the way round, steep in places. Fir trees all around and the odd bird. There are a lot of hawkers at the car parking...More

This was part of a full day tour with Exelans Tourism. Lunch was inclusive. A beautiful blue lake surrounded by pine trees and shrubs. Since it's a volcanic lake and lacks oxygen, it is void of life, even around it. It's peaceful and quiet. Our...More

Get a guide to show you around the lake for a hike that will excite you. There's a zipline for those more courageous. A very interesting back story and great photo opportunities. Don't mind the begging children.

The lake is lovely and there's a perfect short, circular walk around the old crater. The only down side was being pestered by people wanting to sell fossils, stones and jewellery once you'd completed the walk.
