The Strait of Messina, for millennia, has not only been a topographical site, but a "place of the spirit." In the Western world, even non-educated people have read at school the narrative of Odysseus who has to juggle in the Strait (and also loses some companions) between the two monsters crouched on the Calabrian shore (Scylla) and on the Sicilian one (Charybdis). And generally they learn that the ancient Greeks wanted to overshadow with this myth the dangerousness of the sea currents present on both sides of the strait.
Well, the stretch of coast extending from the pylon to the lighthouse is a privileged place to immerse yourself in the myth. The visitor who knows where to look will easily see "Scilla" on the opposite coast, that is the town bearing the same name as the mythical monster; and as for Charybdis, the bubbling of the waters along the nearby coast makes it clear how its legend could have been born.
After my visit, I wanted to deepen the phenomenon, and I understood that the rapid currents, eddies and other unusual phenomena of this sea stretch depend on several factors. Firstly, the difference in the times of the tides between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas, which causes strong currents to compensate for the gap in height between the two seas (the average of the maximum of this gap is 15 cms). Then the fact that the Graben (this is the appropriate geological term) of the seabed of the strait here rises from the abyssal plains of the Tyrrhenian Sea and even more of the Ionian Sea, to form a ridge (or "saddle") only a few dozen meters under the sea level: which in addition involves strong ascending currents (inter alia, these currents frequently bring unusual and monstrous abyssal fish to the surface).
As for the monumental pylon that since 1965 until 1995 allowed electricity to be transported from Calabria to Sicily, it has lost its function, replaced by submarine conduits, and therefore no longer supports overhead cables. But it is proposed as a further landmark, which marks this "place of the spirit" and enhances its symbolic value. So I don't regret its presence (as some visitors do), in the same way that I don't regret the presence of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. I find the sloppiness with which many corners of this coast are kept much more negative.

These pylons as well as having a historical interest now are used by tour guides to point out the shortest distance across the strait from Sicily to the mainland, an can be seen for miles around.

The Pilone with its almost 250 meters is by far the biggest attraction of this sleepy coastal town. Some may see it as an eyesore, located at the very entrance of the Messina Straights but actually it is an important monument to the post-war Italian industrialization. 70 years after the beginning of the construction and no longer used it stands tall reminding of the effort of the reconstruction.

Visited today. There is no obvious way to get into/up the tower, nor any evidence of there being any way available during any other time (i.e. because "now's not the season"). Looks to me like it's no longer ascend-able.
If you're driving, instead of desperately seeking parking on the street as you approach the tower, drive (on the one-way street which gets you to the tower) *past* the tower--about 20m past the tower there's a bit, empty, public, free lot on the right.
Still worth a visit, because, well, it's The Strait of Messina, and it's neat to see Calabria from here, and there are a couple beach cafes at which to hang out with a glass of wine.

This is a small fishing village with very narrow streets, small fish shops and "Big Lake' and "Little Lake". Just a nice place to visit at the north shores.

I knew that Scylla was right across the strait from here and I wondered if there was any mention of Charybdis. The answer is no but it was enjoyable to look at the Strait and see the ships lined up to go through. Plus you can see the the big rock of Scylla right across. Also saw a monument to the soldiers who died in WWI.

A unique feeling to dive between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian between Calabria and Sicily where it seems that space does not exist.

It is not a real review but a response to the owner of Gitano's which is located in the Torre Faro area for the response he gave to my review
Given that as he states, I don't have friends who are restaurateurs or hoteliers but rather restaurants and hotels where I often go because I feel good and eat well
So I don't write reviews to hit some in favor of others as he himself despises the kiosk a stone's throw from his place despite providing a decent service even if from a kiosk and this says a lot and is proof that I also appreciate popular and non-famous places
Torre Faro Capo Peloro are places in my province that I love very much but the people don't know how to do catering or even hospitality
It seems to many that we are stupid and that no one understands when fish is fresh or frozen, it being understood that even frozen fish is of excellent quality if you want to use it.
The crux is that they want to pay for a normal meal at exorbitant prices
It doesn't work like that because if you put me on paper and not cloth there's a difference if you use waiters who work as bricklayers during the day there's a difference if you give me poor quality goods there's a difference but then it doesn't you can present me with a bill equal to someone who gives you superior service and quality of food
Learn to do catering and hospitality
Long live Torre Farò

I am visiting in August 2018. Is this pylon open to the public for climbing? I would love to climb the steps to the top.
