We walked to the Paso del Angel area from Santa Sofia, only to find that the entrance area completely blocked the trail. Apparently the closure was installed in late July or early August. Authorities claim that "rehabilitation" is needed. All indications suggest that this will be a LONG-TERM closure. So do not take this hike - it's not worth it.

We had our hike in August 2019 and we had to stop directly before the exciting part starts, because the small path is closed. It seems to be very short-term before we came here.

Paid 150,000 COL for our family of 4 to go and return with driver/guide from Villa de Leyva. It is pretty, the views are gorgeous. The short pass is not very nail-biting. Very safe with our 9 & 11 year olds. However our guide did not show us to Guatoque waterfall. We just got down to the creek to splash a bit. He was more of a taxi driver than a guide. Just be careful who you pick. We were back to our hotel rountrip in less than 3 hours.

Decided to give this excursion a go, and so took a minibus from Villa de Leyva to Santa Sofia (9000 COP 45 minutes). We decided to walk from santa Sofia, it is about 5km (1.5km along the road, & 3.5km mostly downhill along a rural track) to the paso del Ángel ’entrance’. Upon arrival, a lady asks for 3000 COP per person, and warned us to take care! The trail offers incredible views of the surrounding rolling hills and rivers below. We got there at about 11am and were the only people on the trail, so it was a great opportunity to get some photos and take a break. The step itself provides some excitement and adrenaline, my wife suffers with vertigo and needed 10 minutes to psyche herself up but once we crossed the step we were glad we did, as the trail continues for another 15 minutes down towards the top of the Guataque waterfall which was beautiful and tranquil. The Paso del Ángel hike itself is short (the walk from santa Sofia tales the vast majority of the time), so if you’re short of time consider organising a taxi or try hitchhiking along the rural track, because as we left paso del Ángel there were a few people coming and going in cars. If you do decide to walk remember to bring plenty of water and suncream as the sun got very hot in the midday. Walking both ways to and from santa Sofia took a total of 3 hours plus 1 hour at the attraction.

Great view and adrenaline. I recommend to walk downhill until the river, there is a beautiful waterfall.
