First off the cost is very high especially when booked as a tour (15750 vatu). We were ok to pay though as the experience we expected would be worth it.
We were told on arrival that as the volcano was at a level 3 we couldn’t go to viewing points other than first one (point 5), this means we missed out on the best viewpoints. I get the safety but to charge full amount seems a little unfair.
This view might be good when the volcano is spewing lava high into the air. It didn’t on our visit so we really felt like we were missing out. We asked to go to higher viewing points to see into crater but were told it’s too dangerous. Just as it was beginning to get dark we were told abruptly that it was time to go. The glow was getting better even if there was no lava in sight.
We then went back to visitor centre for refreshments and were then informed that person responsible for them went home - so no refreshments. It could’ve been so much better. Not the easiest place in the world to get to and whilst we understand nature doesn’t always play by our rules they could’ve made the experience much better. Just by giving us some extra time to see the glow at least (rather than taking us to visitor centre to hang around for refreshments that never came). Frustrating to say the least.

Beautiful palce and vulcanos, you can get here with the trip from the city or from your hotel. You have to pay 8000 vatu for entrance to vulcano, wait for guide and everybody around 17.30 go together to the range. You stay there to 19 and after everybody goes down with guide again. Nice experience during a sunset.

Wonderful people, extraordinary scenery and a potentially lethal experience with an erupting volcano. The air taxi was beautifully piloted from Port Vila, followed by an hour and a half ride in the back of a pick-up, a nice sandwich and then up to the crater. The final climb is short but steep. Bring a mask, eye protection and water. A larger eruption covered us in gases and ash. The guides were calm and top notch. Make sure your life and travel insurance are paid up!

We took an Air Taxi tour from Port Vila to Tanna Island with George the pilot and booked with Mili. Spectacular views/eruptions from this active volcano. Air Taxi did the extras to make this a wonderful tour, including flying back the next day a mobile phone we left in the truck and was delivered to our hotel. What a great experience from the flight, the ride across Tanna Island and then the hike up to Mt. Yasur Volcano.

Must see when visiting Tanna Island. It's a bumpy ride to the summit in a 4WD then a climb up some rough steps/path to a viewing area. This is not for the faint hearted!! The show this "Old Man" puts on is awesome. You can get some wonderful pictures and video from your mobile phone as well as the sound. You are that close!! Beware it can get very windy and rainy and the ash is like being sandblasted. They do provide rain coats, goggles and helmets to make it a bit more comfortable. A once in a lifetime experience.

An adventurous 4WD to get to the volcano (similar to Cape York, Australia in terms of river crossings and difficulty). We slid through S-bend mud trails to get there and much more. You see the roads and think there's no way you'll make it there (or back!) but the drivers are the best imaginable. Full confidence and respect to the drivers.
At check in, you can drive up most of the volcano and just walk the last 100m. It is steep but you can rest, take time if needed. I wouldn't be put off by the walk. And it's well worth it anyway.
You stand right on the edge of the rim. Apparently in wet weather, you are more likely to see the glow of lava, but in dry weather it's obviously clear. I went during the day and saw lava bombs go above head level (not near me). Apparently twilight is best cos there is more lava colour contrasts. But if the weather is iffy, just get there when you can or risk the roads being flooded.

No one was there.
We called, emailed, etc.
The place was rundown due to not being used because of covid.
They have not refunded our money.
Expedia has not refunded our money.
Incredibly disappointed in Expedia's handling of this situation.
Don't book here.
Views were amazing though from the location but the road there was insane.
4 wheel drive needed and going through washed out roads and dried rivers.

This was a great adventure although their safety standards are not as stringent as ours in Australia so you need to be very careful and, although children were there, not sure I'd be keen to take kids up there. It's a bit of a hike but no one rushes you. Once the sun goes down - WOW!

Wow. What an epic and mind blowing adventure. You get a straight view right into the heart of our planet. It is a mix of hell and purgatory :-)
The tour is profesionelly managed and easy to do. After a short but good security briefing, you drive a few minutes up to the crater. Then a short steep walk and you are at the rim. There are a lot of guides and securitys to keep everyone safe. There are also helmets, glasses and ash coats available - use them ;-)
If you are lucky, Mnt. Yasur is on level 2/5 activity, so you can get really close and walk to an epic view point. Nether bother what level 4/5 or 5/5 would mean. You will see the gas vents, the red glowing openings, ash and steam erruptions and finally a lot of bigger erruptions with lava bombs. And the whole time the volcano is grumbling like a thunderstorm. When the sun fades away, the epic lava show begins.
As long as the wind blows the usual path, you can enjoy it. If it turns around you get light acid ash rain and lots of sulfur gases, whitch lead to no fun ;-)
We did the afternoon/evening tour twice and it was a good choice. There is also a sunrise tour, but we did not manage to rise so early (start at 3am). You get 30% discount on the second visit and a 100% on the third. You never now the mood of the volcano, so you should spend a second day on Tanna as an option for a second try.

Visit the volcano in the late afternoon, then stay with the tour group until after sunset. (At daylight, it’s much less impressive).
The fire, the glowing stones been ejected and the earthshaking rumbling will be unforgettable.

Has anyone been up with young kids eg 4 and 5? Looking to understand how safe or unsafe it is for calm kids or kids that can't resist running around when excited?

bonjour, par quel organisme êtes vous passé pour la montée au volcan ? et quels étaient les tarifs ?
d'avance merci

Yes! You can visit anytime.
But it is a grey on grey landscape in daylight. On dusk it becomes spectacular. The red glow from the lava pool lights up the crater. The lumps of molten lava flying into the sky are bright red and well worth a couple of hours of your time.
Also there is spectacular snorkelling over coral, the magnificent blue cave, and the turtles!

hello, sorry but I can't answer to your request. I have used a new caledodonian travel agency in Nouméa (Tropic Travels) for planning my trip to Vanuatu.
But you will find in Port Vila a few range of vanuatan travel agencies too.

Hi, could you see the lava lake? I read one review saying you can't see it except from a plane. Thanks for your help :)
Written March 26, 2019
We were able to on our trip, great photos and videos. They decided to allow us around to the viewing point despite the wind being much stronger there than the other points. Awesome to see but it depends on the day due to wind. Be prepared to get sand blasted so to speak but take some safety glasses to keep ash and grit out of your eyes.

What is the name of the company that manages access to the volcano and sell the 9750 tickets?
Written March 9, 2019
They’re not really a company, it’s a tribe and they don’t have a contact number or website. it sort of works by most accommodations just know how to get you there. You basically roll up and pay cash to go on the tour. not really a booking system in a formal sense. it’s Vanuatu, Islander life way

Can you still walk to the rim of mount yasur volcano> I read somewhere they were going to stop it, also anyone have any idea of recent price for tour there? thank you

Overnight tour with Air Taxi 66000vatu/approx $700 Aust. We walked up volcano to rim on tour in Sept.

We are in Tanna for a day to see the volcano. Are there any one day packages available for Mt Yasur? Which are the best and reasonably priced tours available?
Written October 14, 2018
Strongly suggest don’t do 1 day
You want darkness - or I wouldn’t go
My review
All In one post:
Tanna - take cash before you go. Pre book your transfer 5000 local ($62 aud) each. Took hour to accom
We stayed yasir view lodge which you can book via (no website) / it also has a treehouse in the same grounds which you book through air bnb amazingly, when we visited (nov 2018) 1 treehouse available - another one 2 storey was getting RE built after cyclone.
Strongly and highly suggest staying here as it’s opposote the volcano entrance.
Other reviews say take googles, cloths we found no need was clean as and not smelly we also had the wind blowing one way. Was windy at top so take a jumper and long pants (seems strange but yes)
Our host Thomas highly suggested do sunrise tour as less crowded so at 430pm
We walked over to the volcano entrance to see a local dance as they don’t do that in morning. Then in morning we departed. A person that did it the previous evening said the morning viewing you get a lot more darkness compared to morning which is key - it seems as of 2016 you can only do it on tour so 03:30, 11am (don’t know why you would), and 4pm.
Sounds like years ago you could go anytime but not anymore - it’s now around 10000 local , 2nd visit 6000, 3rd visit 500
Accom:
Amazing and brilliant, gardens and grounds well kept, basic facilities but for whats is available is 5/5, u have power when you need it eg 7pm to say 930pm charge your essentials - take an Aussie powerboard with you to make it easier
Strong inspect repellent for tanna including deet recommended.
Personally I think this is the only place to stay - as if you get weather you can easily go again. Mornings seem calmer weather, less crowded. As all other hotels you have to travel hour plus to get here.
Arrived midday > accom >
We also went to port resolut bay stunning coastline in afternoon > am volcano >
And humoursous cannonball fun engaging tour (right next to accom) > blue lagoon cave your > fly out afternoon
Only place to stay, was amazing, local food, great hospitality, very caring
FYI the transfers are expensive because of the damage to vehicles while there x 1 flat tyre - happened earlier week too. So I think it’s reasonable / also all the ash = corrosive. So stay at base the reason why ur there - one lady who we met at volcano was staying easter part island and she was doing 3 visits that’s 3 transfers - 6 hours in a car !!!! - not over smooth roads !!!
Thanks

My husband and I climb the Yasur Volcano in 1983. Accommodation was very basic and we were driven up to the base by a truck and given lunch sitting on a rug. I had rained the night before and when we walked up you could see our footprints. I class this adventure as one of my wonderful holidays. I would love to go again but as I am now 85, I think it would be too much for me, but I have some great memories. I know this is not a question, but it would be nice if you said Hello. Ruth

Accomodation still basic but Whitegrasses was the nicest on the island and I am almost 50 and I struggled but I had people much older than me passing me by, it is hard work but worth every second and the first ascend has a rail all the way up and a seat at this stage but the next section is harder but you just take your time and go slowly and it is worth it and they guides are amazing

Could you please tell me the fitness level needed to experience Mt Yasur. Travelling with family who are adults and could manage but I struggle with up hill walking.
What distance and degree of difficulty for a 60 yo unfit and chubby traveller?
Approx how lone is the uphill
Written June 3, 2018
We just returned from Mt Yasur, while the climb is steep just take your time & stop to catch your breath when needed, that's what I did. I go to the gym 2 times a week & I still couldn't make it without stopping. Several people had to sit down to recover, no shame in doing so. We are on the wrong side of sixty.😊 The overnight tour is better as your there after dark when the glow is more visible. We stayed at Rockwater Resort it's only recently opened, & a welcome oasis after a long day. Don't let the drive on the roads put you off, I suffer lower backpain & never had a problem. They drive slowly so you don't get tossed around. Remember this is not Australia they don't have the resources to maintain the roads. Enjoy.
