- Okky TransporterMalang, Indonesia76 contributionsBlue fireOne of the most unique features of the Ijen Crater is the blue flame phenomenon caused by ignited sulfuric gas. This phenomenon is best seen in the early morning hours before sunrise. It creates an otherworldly and captivating scene that attracts many visitors.Visited August 2023Travelled on businessWritten November 25, 2023
- Irini LinBelfast, United Kingdom116 contributionsAmazing volcanic experienceIt's amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The blue fire and the crater lake are fantastic and it's really a good hike for me. Note the trail is quite challenging and a good walking shoes and walking sticks are a must.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten February 27, 2024
- Peggy AngWilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia1,112 contributionsYou can do this- my promise to myself. This is a trip worst going. It’s dangerous but you can make is safe. I have only about two hours to sleep coz we check in about 9 PM at Hotel Baratha and check out at 12am. Then we have to go by van to the foot of ijen mountain. The road was tough for some as it’s winding up. Take your medicine for car sickness. We need to be there by 2am as the climb open at 2.30 am. If your want to catch the blue fire, you must reach the line by 3.40sm or earlier otherwise you will missed it. The rest of my friends rush up while I crawl like a turtle and still reach in time. You have to make sure you have a great shoes for sandy slippery volcano ash path. It's at 75degee tangent at some climb. They are "Porche 😊,'Ferrari', 'Lamborgini' aka the wheel barrow that fetch you up. Or prices was RPH1.5million while some got it at RPH1million. But it's worst it except I want to have it my way. I climb. You must go if you can. It's an achievement to do it for yourself.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 29, 2024
- titaSerpong, Indonesia22 contributionsSun, Trek1st time hiking, and at 2AM the winds were chilling. But, like the famous saying, the result doesn't betray the process. Upon reaching the peak ar around 5AM, the sun's rays painted a beautiful sight. The Ijen Crater was also visible from the peak, which is amazing. For beginners, Mt. Ijen is a good starting point. Do try go for when the weather conditions are good.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten June 22, 2024
- zabamanHuddersfield, United Kingdom42 contributionsYou don’t have to descend to the crater. To ascend you set off early, we had a guide, although there are so many people doing the sunrise thing you could simply follow the pack. For the ascent early in the morning it will be really cold, bring a fleece and a hat. Also the path up is made of volcanic ash, which gets kicked into the air by the visitor’s, wear a Covid style mask to prevent breathing in the dust and change it a fee times as the ascent is exhausting and your mask will become moist and dirty. You will need a head torch at the very least. You really only need a gas mask if you intend to go down to the creator (don’t do this if you do not have a guide or if you are not fit and sturdy on your feet). There are a few viewing points, I recommend going there to see the sunrise. I enjoyed the return down the mountain in daylight the views were spectacular. It us rare to see the blue flame.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten July 30, 2024
- Mathilde M1 contributionIncredible human experienceClimbing the Kawa Ijen is a unique moment. It's the most incredible human experience I've had in my life. You will need a guide to climb safe and I recommend you to book the best guide in Indonesia : Surya. I've been to the Kawa Ijen 2 times in my life with him and it was always a great experience. He his now a friend and even a brother to me. He speaks English very well, he knows everything about the volcano because he used to be a minor too. He can help you finding a driver too. Surya and his brother helped us so much to go to the Ijen. I want to come back again to meet them again ! Don't hesitate one second to book him or his brother. This is his number : Surya : +62 822-2857-8687 His brother Jian : +62 822-4284-1487 Thank you so much to them 🙏🏻Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 16, 2024
- Fiona I73 contributionsStunning!I absolutely loved this. We visited in September 2024 after Ijen opened again to visitors after some increased volcanic activity. The ‘blue fire’ is still closed so we didn’t see that, but to be honest, I was more interested in the hike and the views from the top of the volcanic crater. So I was really happy. The hike felt good to stretch the legs and the views were incredible. You’re above the clouds with the tops of the volanoes and the beautiful blue lake in Ijen itself. Would really recommend. We didn’t find the hike difficult as there is a clear path all the way, but we are experienced hikers so maybe it would be too steep for people less confident in the mountains. Remember good hiking boots, sensible layers of clothing, water to drink, and some kind of protection for your face - even if the sulphur fumes are ok, the wind can blow the dust around a lot so a mask or something is useful.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2024

I travelled to Mount Ijen along with my wife and kids aged 5 and 8 years on 6th April 2021. A few key points
1) We did the hike in morning at 6 am as didn't want to do in night so as not to disturb children's sleep.
2) We didn't took any tour and travelled in our private car from Ijen city. Please note that you pass through a jungle for around 30 minutes before Ijen crater and in pitch morning darkness this is quite scary.
2) We reached the base of Mount Ijen at 6 am Although the mountain was open for tourists but due to travel restrictions there were no international tourists and was visibly empty. You don't need any gas mask unless you want to go to the mining area and this is a no go zone for tourists
3) The hike to mountain is demanding but possible unless you are in good shape. It takes around 2 hours and the initial 1-2 km has steep climb and the last 1 km stretch has less slope. This will really challenge you and set your heartbeat racing. We finally relented and took the trolley services and they charged around 1 million IDR to take our kids up and back. However we adults decided to walk by ourselves.
4) Good thing is you have a few locations where you can sit and take a break. You will also get a small warung at middle of the climb for tea and coffee. After this warung there is no toilets so please be careful
5) At the top of the mountain the view is spectacular. However, based on the wind the Sulphur smoke sometimes is directed towards you. In such a case please climb to a higher location and the smoke will not bother you.
6) Please spend around 1-2 hours to enjoy the moment there. We had a fantastic climate but due to Sulphur smoke billowing could not get a clear view.

Hike up was very strenuous and tiring. You can pay 800kIDR to be carted up but I feel that it was really expensive, yet scary and quite dangerous at the same time. My group and I took a long time to get to the top of the crater. We did not journey down the crater as it would’ve been too late to see the blue flame. Moreover, the journey down was also extremely hard without any trekking gear like trekking sticks, as the steps are very narrow and do not have any barrier. Should you slip and fall, you will most certainly fall to your death.
Nevertheless, we got to see the sunrise at the top of ijen and it was magnificent. Disliked the sulfur smell. I don’t think the climb up was cold as you will probably exhaust yourself from the climb up and consequently heat up your body. Can just bring a thin jacket if you are afraid of the cold. However, it can be quite cold at the volcano top, so you might wanna bring some heat packs. Lights are a must, whether it’s headlamps or torchlight. Without the lights, it just pitch black. I would say you need considerable fitness to hike up easily. I experienced some difficulties myself.
Overall very nice views at the top and on the way back. Super scenic, I enjoyed it greatly.

This is a great activity and gives so many original experiences: blue fire, experience sulphur gas and mine tour, sunrise view from crater rim.
I highly recomend going with an agency for proper masks and safety in the mine. It was well worth the 1,000,000 IRD ($100 cad) for the ride, masks, food and professional guide.
I recomend blueflametour.com
I work in mining and would consider the activity high risk without an experienced guide.
I saw many people with masks that had improper filters for sulphur and they were caughing a lot because of it.
It can also be very crowded so try and get there as soon as possible.
We departed from Banyuwangi at 00:15.

Mount Ijen is so majestic and impressive, and yet it also left me emotional due to the mine workers who live in the worst circumstances one can imagine.
The crater lake view is absolutely worth the steep and never-ending climb and the fact that you need to defy the sulfur gasses on the way up (or down into the crater for the blue flames). Make sure to bring your own gas mask before visiting this place. The ones they offer you there are so old and dirty, I can guarantee you they make it worse instead of better. Also, you could donate your gas mask to the mine workers afterwards, who are too poor to buy one themselves and have to work in the sulfur gasses day in day out.
Read all about them and how the climb to Mount Ijen really is in the 'Visit Mount Bromo and Ijen' post on my website xgetaway.
You can also find the names and contact details of our private guides and driver on our cheap 3-day private tour of the East of Java.

We booked the excursion through Our Homestay in Banyuwangy (travel, guide, mask, head torch, water and breakfast), pick-up time 00.45. You can also do it independently, but you need to have a mask and torch (I don't know if they can be rented there). Arrival at the chalet at 01.30, while waiting for the entrances to open (02.00), you can have a hot tea. Let's go! The route is really tough if you are not at least a little trained, it is 3.4km of which the first 700 m are easy, then about 2km uphill with a fairly steep slope, the remaining ones are quite flat again. Along the route there are 2 "refreshment" points with bathrooms. Once you get to the top, if you arrive while it is still night, it is worth going down to the crater to see the blue flames. The route is steep and rugged. Greater difficulty is encountered in the ascent given the many people coming down. To be done very carefully because there are really dangerous points. For the descent to the crater you must wear a mask, because the air is truly unbreathable, in fact when you get to the flames the gases also burn your eyes. After climbing up from the crater we witnessed the sun rise (around 5 am), but only after an hour the fog disappeared and the view of the acid lake in the crater opened up.
The last important thing is clothing: they will tell you that it is cold on the mountain, but we who did it on September 28th were 10 degrees, so it is relatively "cold". This is to tell you that if you dress too warm, you will sweat a lot during the route.

3 in a family, with young teenage daughter. The path up to Ijen Crater was quite well defined with some steep slopes. Magnificent sunrise point with a great view of the sunrise at about 5:20am in one side and the crater on the other side. Didn’t manage to go to the blue fire area as it was advised that it can be dangerous. Visitors were mostly adults and very very few teenagers or children. Easier than Mount Batur in Bali but still 2-3 hours of trekking with sulphur fumes in the second half of the walk. Family enjoyed this immensely as it was hard, but can be overcome by frequent rest stops.
IMO not suitable for children below 12 years old because of the physical demands of the journey overnight, but this is just my opinion in general. But then again, there is flexibility to stop wherever it is comfortable for the family.

See it steaming down the enormous Mount Ijen during the night over a turquoise and tranquil acid lake as the sun starts to rise. It will leave you in awe as the various shades of pink and purple sulphur clouds rise above the mountain. This is an Indonesian adventure like no other!

We went to see the blue flame, but we were shocked with just how BEAUTIFUL it is! We got to the gates right around opening at 1am and were lucky to see the blue flame very clearly! The hike was much easier than I expected as the path itself was always this consistent rubble texture.
The view from the top of the crater is absolutely gorgeous. Right at sunrise it's packed, but if you just wait 30 minutes it clears out! At one point we were the only ones up there.
Our guide was also amazing. He also works as a miner when he's not guiding and it was so great to really get to know so much about both the mountain and the people working there. They do incredibly tough labor for little pay. Our guide's English was perfect and if you're looking for one you can find him on Facebook under "Sugi.Ijen".
Highly highly recommend. Better than any hike I've done in Bali, Banda, and other parts of Indonesia. One of the best hikes of my life actually! Be careful with the sulfur clouds though. Even with the gas masks if you get swallowed by them it still really hurts your nose, throat, and eyes. We wore glasses as well for that reason, but it's only right by the flame that you'll have this problem!

For the third time here, it seems that you will not be bored to enjoy the exotic natural beauty of Ijen Crater. Here we can see green craters and active sulfur spots. During a pandemic, this place only opened at 3 am. With a leisurely walk, we will reach the top when the sun has risen. Make sure to wear a jacket, gloves and shoes that are comfortable for climbing. At the last post there is a stall that provides snacks. Along the way up and down, we will be 'accompanied' by a cart service seller who offers tired visitors to ride a cart for 600k (up).

Hi, I came across a recent 2024 article saying that Mt Ijen's blue flame is opened to tourist to visit up close ONLY if you have a guide, a medical note from doctor saying youre in good condition, and a gas mask. Is this true?
Also, do you have to have a guide even if you don't plan to go down to see the blue flames? can you hike independently?
Many thanks!

I'm planning a trip to Indonesia in the first half of October. On my destination list are East Java (hikes to Bromo and Ijen), Bali and Komodo islands.
I've read mixed opinons online: that October is a still good month for those places, and that October is the beginning of a rainy season. What weather can I expect? What are the chances of a rainfall making hikes to Bromo and Ijen impossible?
Would you recommend doing this trip in October, or should I try to go in September?

Hello, is it possible to rent hiking boots at the bottom? Someone mentioned that it *might* be. My trainers have really flat bottoms so can be slippery and I wouldn't be confident doing it without hiking boots (I left mine in a hostel somewhere!)
Written February 10, 2020
Hi mmm I am not sure about that. I don’t recall seeing anywhere where you could hire boots from. To tell you the truth runners are sufficient as the main path up and down is pretty good and even when you hike down into the crater they will be fine. Maybe you could contact a tour operator and run it by them they may have heard of somewhere. Good luck and enjoy this amazing experience:)

I am travelling to east Java and want to see the blue lake on ijen.. I only.want to see the lake by day. I have a 6 year old boy and want to know if he would cope and if it's possible to only see the lake by day, does anyone have any suggestions on if it's ok for a child or if I'd have to go alone? Also if I could just visit the lake in the day and the best way to do that? Thanks.
Written November 18, 2019
I think you’d need to check if restriction to climb up to crater top during day due to the miners work.. I believe it’s closed to tourists in the afternoon. The local tour operators would be able to answer. You could walk most of it but it is tough, there are trolleys to bring you to the top if you’re struggling they offer lifts at most points of the climb up.

I'm looking to climb ijen about 2 weeks into December and was wondering the best way to do it. I'm a solo female traveller but don't want to be stuck on a tour with lots of people and everything on a schedule. Is there an easy way to meet similar people and arrange for a local guide or something like that to take us? Many thanks
Written November 13, 2019
If you don't mind being alone, just take a plane to Banyuwangi then ask your hotel to arrange transportation from airport & to Paltuding Ijen. There is a gate at Paltuding to buy ticket to kawah ijen. The gate is open at 12 midnight, then you may ask the person in the ticket box about local guide who can guide you up to the peak to see sunrise & see bluefire. If you want to see both bluefire & sunrise, better start walking from 00.30.
Sometimes the hotel also provide private tour to Ijen. However, the cheapest way is go to directly to Paltuding Ijen & pay directly to local guide at the gate (you pay the guide later after you finish your hiking).

Is there an official website where I can find opening/closure information? I heard that due to the fires, the crater was closed and would like to know the status.
Written November 8, 2019
Unfortunately there is no actual website for the volcano. Your best bet is to check the status on google or go to Instagram and check the hashtags #ijencrater #ijenvolcano

When in October did you hike Ijen? I'm going next week and my homestay just informed me that the park is closed. Is this true? I've been wanting to see the flames for the past 2 years.
Written October 23, 2019
Sorry I only saw your question today. That is such hard luck. I hope all is resolved soon and the park resumes safely. Best of luck.
