This is the best viewpoint to admire Bagan Archaeological Site from above

Bagan (Nann Myint) Viewing Tower is a watchtower 61 meters high (200 feet-built with concrete and steel, open in 2005) which provides you the best view over the Bagan Archaeological Site (13x8 Km between Old and New Bagan), an UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 2019) and full of ancient Buddhist Temples, Pagodas and Monasteries (2229 in total from 11th to 13th century). The entrance fee is about 5 US$ (about 6500 Myanmar Kyats) and on the 13th floor (open viewing) you experience an astonishing view over a sea of temples and pagodas on the whole area of Bagan (panoramic view), while there is a bar offering drinks (having also happy hour in the afternoon). A nice view you can also enjoy on the 11th floor (taking the elevator), while on the 9th and 10th floors there are restaurants (view and dine) and meeting rooms on other floors (and souvenir shop). The best time to visit Bagan Viewing Tower (or Bagan Nann Myint Viewing Tower) is in the morning for sunrise or in the afternoon for observing sunset, although sometimes there are a lot of people on the observation deck (crowded and noisy). The Bagan Viewing Tower is an inexpensive alternative to experience the wonderful views over Bagan (full of numerous ancient pagodas and temples), considering that the Bagan Hot Air Ballon Experience over Bagan is the best but the most expensive way. In conclusion I consider a visit to Bagan Viewing Tower as a must (a unique experience) if you are visiting the area of Bagan and certainly, I fully suggest it.

An elevated place that displays maximum pagodas and temples spread across bagan.
Must try to go to enjoy sunset or sunrise.

It costs 5 USD to enter the viewing tour. Built in the style of towers like that at Mandalay Palace, this is a modern version with a lift and a sky bar. Drinks are on the pricey side - but you're here for the sunset, not the cocktails, even if it is happy hour!

Since the 2016 earthquake and the goal to preserve the Pagodas this is definitely a compromise but it does provide a vantage point for sunrise & sunset. This is the new reality of excessive travelling to vulnerable sites and those affected countries trying to preserving their cherished monuments.

Yes it is totally out of character for the area and is probably one of the things stopping UNESCO status but as it has an enormous hotel around it and a golf course its hardly going to be demolished. Whether you use it, which can support its existence, or not is a difficult call. In the end we did and had some great photos, not cheap at 10000. But having had experiences of Chinese at sunset in Mandalay we certainly weren't going to repeat that again so arrived late afternoon 90 minutes before sunset, had the place to ourselves with plenty of time for photos and left.

Read a few questionable reviews. Don't see what the problem is. A viewing tower with a great view........ Ehh thats it.

360 degree views of the extended area. I thought it was pretty good. Some think it shouldn't be there.

Logically you could argue on that basis that the temples should be 'pulled too' on the basis it ruins nature.

How about we just enjoy the views.

Yes the tower is an eyesore. Yes it is $5 US to enter. Yes it gets crowded and noisy.
But, it does have a great view and with no climbing on temples this is a good option. My tip is when it gets busy on the 13th floor either head down the external staircase for great views or go down to the 3rd floor area and have the same great views with only 2 or 3 other people there. So quiet!

You might have a nice view around but the big groups of Chinese marred the whole sunset. Pushing each other around and you out of the way and shouting was it not a very relaxed sunset.

Although it is an obvious crime to the natural beauty of the surroundings, this tower proves to be a worthy alternative for those who do not wish to take the balloon to have an overview of the valley. Pretty crowded at sunset but worthwhile.
