We went down around noon-ish, and there was practically none of the night-life open that other reviews talk about. One or two small stalls selling cold drinks, that was it. The sign itself is, well, a sign. Take your picture, and you're basically done.
The malecon in Chetumal runs for a fair distance along the rocky shore of the Atlantic Ocean, There are hotels & restaurants on the non beach side, it is a pleasant walk with a nice breeze on hot days, but little else.
