We came from Puyuhuapi (where the local park had been closed for Christmas and day after - the time when a lot of foreigners tour the country) and only arrived at the Riserva Rio Simpson at 3.30 p.m. There was not much time to go until closing time of the park. It was too late for any long hikes. Basically, we wanted to visit the museum and then leave again. But since Chile generally does not put the slightest effort in any service for foreigners, we were not sure whether we would profit from the museum. Most of the time, none of the staff speak English, there are no written explanations in English, no films are in English, and often exhibitions are for school kids rather than for educated adults.
But one cannot even see the museum from the entrance. One is expected to pay first and then check whether the site is worth the entrance fee. This put us off already.
But on top of that more than twice the entrance fee for us that Chileans pay - for no service and for only about 1,5 hrs before closing time? That must be a joke!
More and more we avoid visiting tourist sites on our trip through Chile because for foreigners they tend to be a ripoff ...

Stopped here on a tour from a cruise ship docked in Chacabuco. The Simpson Reserve and river was scenic but not spectacular. The new wooden information centre was excellent and very informative. The short walks of 30 minutes or an hour gave you an outdoor experience along the river viewing the fauna and flora.

I went here on a ship excursion out of Puerto Chacabuco, and how BEAUTIFUL it is!!! Sure, you might not get a lot of time to see it, but it is TOTALLY worth going to see!! There are little signs in front of the trees that tell you what kind they are, most of which I have never seen. Then there is a nice little visitors center that explains the fauna and flora of the area. Of course, there are some large stuffed bird species in the museum, which includes the MAGNIFICIENT condor! There are some unique mammals in the area as well. In the reserva, there is English Muffin rock, which is HUGE!! It reminds me a little of El Capitan, the largest granite dome in the world. This area is the best chance to see a condor, but use binoculars, a spotting scope or high powered lens and be observant because they are VERY high in the air and they are FAST!! There is a very nice waterfall to see as well, although it's quite crowded. One piece of advice if you're taking a cruise ship excursion, sit next to the window on the right side of the bus when leaving the port, that's where the best views are going into the valley. Trust me, I learned this the hard way.

We booked a tour of the Reserve as part of a cruise calling at Puerto Chacabuco. The tour began with a scenic drive to Coyhaique crossing the Andes via a mountainous route on a narrow road along the Simpson River. We stopped at the Rio Simpson Reserve where we enjoyed magnificent views of the landscape and checked out the Visitor's Center containing a number of displays depicting the local flora and fauna. Continuing on, a photo stop was made at the Alto Baguales viewpoint where we experienced superb views of the city.
In Coyhaique we visited a local handicrafts market and enjoyed light refreshments before the drive back to the ship. It's all about the scenery on this tour.

This national reserve has the most beautiful nature. I was there in late spring, early summer and everything was green, flowers were blooming, rivers were full. I just love how there are a lot of valleys and next to them high mounts and from time to time a waterfall. So peacefull and tranquil.

The Rio Simpson National Reserve is designed for visits by people who are mobility challenged, time-limited or just lazy. It consists of a tiny little circuit trail that goes from the road to the river and has a small little off-shoot that goes to the river itself. The little museum on site is pretty interesting. Even though I am not a fan of taxidermy, there are some examples of the key mammals and birds. Since you won't likely see many of them up close, especially not in the Reserve, take a peek. You really won't need too much time here.

We came off the cruise ship and went on a 4 hour tour which includes this NP,
We paid US$5 for entry and was given only 1/2 hour to walk about. which we did with much disappointment as what could one see in such a short span of time.
Nothing spectacular about the river or the Park.
Sorry to say - this is not a NP but likely a state park if you r from USA
Given the lack of attractions upon arrival to Puerto Chacabuco, the other places where the driver brought us re Fishing Naked might be of more interest. see picture for directions - but bring your own rod !

This national park is right along the Simpson River between Puerto Chacabuco and Coyhaique. It has a small snack shop, toilets, and some exhibits in the park building. Nature trails are easy to walk on and there are beautiful views of the river, mountains, and the rest of the area.

Asking for a 6-7 hour trek in the Rio Simpson Reserve
Written November 19, 2017
Hello,
We are visiting Coyhaique and we want to go to Rio Simpson National Reserve.
How do we get there from Coyhaique? Is there a bus going there? (we don't have a car)
Are there nice trails, and how long is the hike?
Hope to hear from some of you soon!
Greets,
Francois
