Lively place in the center. See it - as it is the main square- and walk around a few minutes. This place is surely not the most beautiful. It is a rather basic square in a weird town. Mainly inner Chilean tourists and locals.

Ancud is probably the least favored city in Chiloe by the salmon industry, but holds some of its best historic places. Walk around the city, visit their market, the historic museum and the replica of the Goleta Ancud, the ship where Chileans arrived to fight the last battles for independence against Spanyards

My tour was not in Ancud that long but the plaza was alive at the time with a protest and a singer. The plaza itself is large enough for a small town. Its focus is a bandstand. The cathedral is at one end and other nice shops like Cafe Blanco are nearby.

I like the whole concept of public squares - areas that are the centers of community life, where everyone strolls, meets, greets and generally comes together at all sorts of times, sometimes in a hurry, other times for a nap on a bench. The Castro plaza is a fine example. Perhaps it's not the fanciest public square around, but it does appear to be genuine. The people strolling about are not actors on a set, rather they are real Castro residents - and a visitors like me - living their lives and intersecting briefly in the process. That's what life in a plaza is all about. Don't miss Castro's version.
