Kids can get their hands ‘dirty’ when cooking gingerbread cookies. Interesting displays about baking and the baker’s (family) life in the old days.
The life bread demo was fun to watch and kept everyone entertained for quite some time.
Treasure hunts available for different ages.
The layout with multiple buildings is funny and embers the museum in the old streets of Hattem.
The typical ‘poffertjes’ are a treat after the tour.

Treasure hunt, bake your own cookies and the fabulous show “how to make your own bread animals”. And the museum of course, finish with tradition dutch poffertjes!

We took the bus #203 from the Zwolle railway station, within 15 minutes we arrived at the stop Hattem Centrum. From the very first moment we enjoyed the great mediëval atmosphere in the village. The very interesssting Dutch Bakery Museum is located at the edge, almost hidden in a small street. It looks small but after entering you will be overwhelmed how many rooms and levels this museum has, incredible! It's a kind of trip into history when baking started to become popular due to the growing population. You will see a lot of old machines and devises, tools and huge puppets in original clothing, pretty nostalgic. When you have reached the lowest part of the museum, the path goes under the road and finally you will arrive at the other side of the museum. There you can enjoy a range of nice baking items in the small restaurant. Highly recommended and not to be missed if you intend to visit Hattem, one the Hanze villages.

We were there on a rainy Easter Monday. So, we expected it to be busy. But we had no idea of how much people the museum can handle. Well, the spaces are quite narrow, and in many they were taken up by demos and kids making cookies. It was near impossible to manouver, and with the cookie baking unclear how long one had to wait for a spot.
I can imagine this being a nice place to visit when less crowded. As it was, we felt a bit cheated to have paid the full entrance prize. And I heard many others comment it was too busy to bake a cookie, yet overheard a lady from the staff it wasn't so busy the place was bursting YET.
I think it would have been more honest to work with time slots and limit the visitor numbers on such busy days. We may have been disappointed to be turned away, but not as disappointed as we were to pay for entrance and not being able to enjoy our visit.

This is an amazing place to take kids. Not only is it informative, it's very entertaining as well. Our daughter had a fabulous time making gingerbread and also solving the puzzle layed across 2 buidings. Nice cafeteria for lunch or snack. A perfect day.

Very unique type of museum, the displays were nice, it is much bigger then it looks. Much Bigger. Only issue we had was there was ZERO English. We would have enjoyed it much more even with brief English descriptions.

The Bakkerij Museum was a real treat! I entered with no expectations and was amazed at what I learned about the history of baking -- from everyday bread through the most elaborate pastries and cakes. The museum has a interesting layout, as you pass from one exhibit to the next. The kids who were visiting the museum with their families seemed to be loving it, as did the adults.

We really enjoyed the exhibits even though there were no explanations in English (I just had to practice my Dutch). We especially liked the patisserie section, with its fascinating display of very elaborate stencils for making chocolate and marzipan forms. It's bigger than what it first seems.
Be warned - you will develop a craving for bread/chocolate/pastry while visiting. Luckily, they also made quite tasty krakeling.

If you are able to time your visit so you can attend the show, both children as adults are in for a great treat. And if it is not too, the cookie baking class is a great experience for childeren. The museums displays are limited but interesting for adults, but could be boring for childeren for lack of interaction. The puzzle trail partialy makes up for this. Some up to date documentaries or storytelling would help.

An attractive and historical shop welcomed us into the museum. The shop offers a wide range of nostalgic cakes and biscuits as wel as baking products and storage tins. We found the large range of floor and baking mixes most enticing and knew we would come back here after the tour. The staff wear period customs and there are bakers on hand to answer questions which all adds to the ambience.
The tour tells the story of bread and baking trough the ages with story boards, videos and historic scenes. For families with younger children there is biscuit making and a VERY FUN and entertaining live baking show with family friendly banter and plenty of interaction.
The buildings are joined by a tunnel crossing making this a very uniek location. After the demonstration we enjoyed a cup of tea with some simple, but very tasty cakes naturally baked on the premises.
When visiting with young children, time it right so they can participate in the activities and allow for a couple of hours. When visiting as adults, take your time and be assured there is plenty of cake at the end.
