    Walking the Siq
The Siq is the main entrance to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra in southern Jordan. Walking the length of the Siq is approximately 3/4 of a mile, and is a very nice walk. Leaving the Siq and first seeing Petra is absolutely amazing.

    Impressive
The first interesting part of the archaeological site. From the Visitor center to the entrance to this impressive canyon, you have to walk about 2.5 km (there are a lot of locals who offer mules for rent). The canyon is slightly more than 1000 m long and ends at the foot of the impressive Treasury. The vertical walls of red stone are impressive. The road is flat and easy to travel. Very crowded, there are hundreds of tourists, some coming, others leaving.

Gorge leads visitors to the Treasury
The Siq is a narrow gorge that leads visitors to the Treasury, the heart of Petra. It is quite amazing and has many spectacular features. It's around 1.2 km (1 mile) long. The Siq was created by the natural splitting of the mountain. By the way, you can have a return trip on the golf cart if your legs are weary, it's quite inexpensive.

    The Shaft
It means means "the shaft." Walking through the Siq is an experience in itself. The entrance to the city of Petra is through the narrow gorge, which is flanked by soaring high cliffs. The long walk through the canyon is exciting for its historical treasures and also being one of the unique geological landscapes.

The otherworldly rock formations are amazing to walk through. This is not a short walk though so be prepared. The rock formations are photo worthy.

Using my Jordan Pass, I began my visit here. There are locals asking me if I wanted to ride their camels, decided to walk to the Treasury. There are huge boulders, canyons, narrow paths along the way. Took photos and periodically rested.

Electric Car: The one-way fare is 15 dinars per person or about US 21! Quite expensive for a short ride, my legs were happy!

The main passage to the ancient city wasn't created by man, but by nature itself. This spectacular, winding gorge, created by natural rock formations and leading visitors through cliffs up to 200 metres high that artfully shield the sunlight, forms a dramatic entrance to Petra's most iconic site, the Treasury.

The Siq is the natural cleft in the rocks with steep sides and a sliver of blue sky above that runs for around 1km until it opens up into the city with the iconic view of the Treasury ahead. There are carvings and an ancient water channel to admire along the way which gives an excuse to stop frequently on the uphill return from the visit. Unless you are fortunate enough to go very early you will have to share the narrow path with noisy tour groups, squeeze into the sides to let golf carts pass and even jump out of the way of barely controlled horses and donkeys carrying tourists who have come to somewhere that is beyond their health and fitness level (or are being rushed to fit in a too brief visit by their travel company).
Despite the provision of rubbish bins every few metres there are still people who are too lazy to dispose of their bottles and packets responsibly. Reviewers who blame the Jordanian government for this have missed the point.

It is the walk down the narrow gorge with its towering natural sandstone cliffs that really adds to the overall experience of visiting Petra.

Along with the colourful striations in the sandstone you get to see small carvings to allow for worship of the local gods and the gully that was carved to supply running water to the city below.

Take some decent shoes as the walk back up is a fair treck and the the path can become muddy and slippery if it has rained which was the case when we visited.

So beautiful. We saw it a little bit wet from rain and it was even more beautiful! What an amazing path to the Treasury.
