I worked for the National Forest through college. I have visited national parks across the central and east US, but this is by far one of the hidden gems. Camping is great, wildlife is beautiful, and the sites are well kept.

The Ozark Highland Trail is a great experience. Very well marked from Lake Fort Smith, AR to Tyler Bend State Park. Bits accessible at many points in between.

We had a pretty even pro/con list for this park. Some recreation/camping areas are better than others. We got lucky and happened to pick a good one - Redding on the Mulberry River (good bathrooms). White Rock Mountain camping was small, bathrooms yuck. But the view there and the Rim Ridge Trail is beautiful! Shoals Lake camping was crowded (but... More

We took the supposedly .7 mile trail but seemed like 1.7 miles but the scenery was well worth it. The pedestals were absolutely beautiful and the view was even better. If you look around you will see something eye catching every step of the way. Make sure to bring water and snacks because you get so caught up in the... More

We visited this area with friends who love to hike...and they talked us into making the trek to Pedestal Rock. It was about a mile each way...and since we are not hikers ourselves....it was quite a strenuous experience. Unfortunately, it began to rain when we were halfway back to the car....making things even more difficult. The walk was very nice... More

So many pretty places to see in the Ozarks. This was a new area to me and I loved it. From the Buffalo River to Petit Jean there is beauty and history all around, it would take years to see all the beautiful, rivers, waterfalls, mountains and fun attractions in the Ozarks forests. Some of the highlights for this trip for... More

You don't just enjoy this national forest by going there. You enjoy it when you are driving near this beautiful medium-size community. You can hike the trails, or you can just drive through or around, just enjoying the scenery.
