Matsushima Bay is beautiful and rated as one of Japan's top three scenic areas. It features windswept islands in all shapes and forms. The best way to view these islands are by boat and there is a tour boat offering about a 45 minute narrated...More

Matsushima gets its name from matsu (pine) and shima (island). To get here, one can take the Tohoku line to Matsushima-kaigan station from Sendai station. The River Cruises gave us a profound introduction to the Bay and the islets on it. Many of the islets...More

We managed to visit this beautiful place on a sunny day after typhoon Lan struck Miyagi Prefecture earlier. Made up of some 200 small islands which covered by pine trees, some look like bonsai plants. We took Senseki Line from Sendai to Matsushima Kaigan Station....More

Matsushima - as the name states, it's all about pines (matsu) and islands (shima). Matsushima Bay is one of the Three Views of Japan. The pine-covered rock islets have been a sightseeing destination for at least a thousand years. The best way to see the...More

On previous trips to Japan we had missed this area. A super experience with stunning vistas, fun activities and several peaceful hikes.. Best hint: head to the long red bridge out to one of the islands. There is a modest fee to cross and also...More

Less than 100 miles N. of Fukushima, but unaffected my tsunami - Matsushima Bay is full of beautiful small islands with trees resembling multiple bonsai displays. Cruises enjoyable - but on smaller boats watch for choppy water.

There are two separate compamies that run trips. No discernible difference that we could see. Commentary in limited English, which sometimes was a bit slow off the mark, so we had already passed the islands/ landmarks in question! Ha ha all part of the fun,...More
