(English version below) Mi viaje a Purace fue algo especial. We did this hike in November 2016 as a one-day trip from Popayan. It is very challenging hike, as you actually ascend 1400m in 4 hours! We are not very experienced hikers, that said, it is doable and well worth the effort. If you want to see the fantastic views, it is very essential to take the first bus that... More

I visited the San Jose Thermals recently after climbing the Volcano in Feb. Definitely a must do, I organised a trip with the ex Jefe del PNN Purace where we had an in-depth insight into history and developments of the park.

I recommend take a car with a local guide and explore this park during the day. It's very very beautiful! Take a lunch box and a hot tea with you. Do not forget a rain jacket and waterproof shoes.

Really worthwhile despite cold and rain. To put out food for condors and see them fly in and be able to photograph them from two metres away is unique. This is one of the best wetlands in world, feeding the Magdalena and Cauca rivers, never dry

The visits to this national park are now run by the local indigenous people so the central government claims that the park is closed - which can be confusing for tourists. Colombian national parks are quite odd anyway as they are there to preserve habitats rather than allow visitors access. The visit to this park usually consists of viewing Andean... More

First things first. If you want to reach the top of the volcano, you have to start very early in the morning by taking a bus that leaves the terminal in Popayan at 5:00 AM. The reason is that by 11:00 or 12:00 noon, the weather has a tendency to be more challenging, especially the closer you get to the... More

We took the 7 am bus from the bus terminal in Popayan with Sotracauca to the aguas termales de San Juan. The bus ride was very expensive (20000 pesos one way) and took more than 2 hours ( very bad road). When we arrived it was raining so heavily that we didn' t get very far and stayed in the... More

We visited the NP Purace, but we decided not to climb the volcano, as it's steep and long hike. Instead, we did the 15km trail from Termales San Juan to condor viewing point. It's probably easier to do it with private transportation, but that option is very pricy. So we took the public transportation. There are few bus companies that... More

make sure you have a good guide with you (35.000 COP /day for a local indian guide if you speak spanish, guides from Popayan are more expensive) . have the transport arranged - best is private transport - you can take mini bus from popayan to purace village if you stay there or go directly further towards the termales de...
