This place is easy to get to from Southern California. Around 2 hours drive. The lake is at 6700 feet so a great retreat from LA summers.

Be warned before you set out for Big Bear Lake. The water level is extremely low, the first 50 to 100 feet of water that there is is full of green algae. The lake itself is a brackish gray color, not the sparkling blue you...More

I visited in August and the water was very dirty. It was covered by algae and smelled bad as well. It was a huge disappointment.

Apparently the area had experienced a mild winter and hot summer so the lake was only half as full as usual. However, it was also not as big as I had anticipated. Enjoyed our visit, nevertheless, as it's a nice area.

Beautiful lake with hiking, boating and activities for all. We come here every year. This year though lake was very low and not much activity going on.

The ride up to the lake was beautiful. The lake was a bit disappointing as the water level was considerably reduced. The town was touristy, but not overly so - expected assortment of shops and enough restaurants. The surrounding area is beautiful and worth exploring.

There’s no cost associated with going to the lake. Certain activities would have costs depending on what you wanted to do.

Temperatures are high 70’s during day , 40’s at night. September could be getting into some monsoon rains. But historically maybe only one day out of the month. Still fun all year.
