About
With a stunning landscape shaped by volcanic forces and natural erosion, this magnificent state park is a must-see whenever you’re in Burney. Wander through lush forests, spot a range of wildlife, and check out the 129-foot Burney Falls—a National Natural Landmark. Its three main hiking trails get you right up close. A portion of Lake Britton is also accessible for swimming, boating, water sports, fishing, and more. This popular park sees the most travelers between April and October, and is especially packed on the weekends, so mid-week is the best time to visit for fewer crowds. – Tripadvisor

- RevathiSan Ramon, California345 contributionsIncredibly beautiful!I really loved this place because it's incredibly beautiful and much bigger than I expected. The trail that goes around it was fantastic to walk on. If you're in the Shasta area, you must visit this lovely state park. You'll be surrounded by the constant, soothing sound of flowing water, creating a profoundly tranquil ambiance throughout the area.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 16, 2023
- johnyboydSan Ramon, California290 contributionsAwesome views, easy trailsDrove in from Redding at about 11am. Very light traffic being a weekday. We had a quick lunch at the town outside. Did the fall loop trail at a leisurely pace, Easy hike with great great views of the falls. The record snow/rains from last winter has blessed us with lots of water. Did a little 100 feet detour to get a photo-op on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). All together it took us about 3 hrs. We then drove about 35 miles to the Mccloud river/falls as well.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 17, 2023
- BruinDanFullerton, California3,197 contributionsHikers – don’t ignore the Burney Falls Loop TrailBurney Falls is arguably one of the most stunning sights in the state of California, and is understandably the centerpiece of McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. However, many visitors pass up the Burney Falls Loop Trail, a 1.1 mi/1.8 km loop with about 300 ft/91 m of elevation gain. My wife and I hiked this trail in late April of 2023. The trail begins at the Burney Falls overlook; from there the trail winds down several switchbacks to the base of Burney Falls, where you get a magnificent view of these amazing falls. This is the point at which most people turn around and return to the trailhead, but if you continue along the trail you are treated to some interesting sights. The trail continues along the creek, where you will find some interpretive signs. If you look closely at the rock wall on the opposites shore, you might see water leaking out and cascading into the creek like mini-waterfalls. Before long, you’ll come upon a bridge (appropriately called the Rainbow Bridge because of its shape). Cross the bridge (you can get some good photos of Burney Creek from the bridge) over to the opposite side of the creek. It is from this point that you’ll begin the gradual incline toward the top of the falls. The good news is that there are benches at several points along the way where you can stop and rest. Eventually you will see a couple of interesting sights – the top of Burney Falls and the trail’s intersection with the Pacific Crest Trail. From there you cross over another bridge which takes you to the portion of the trail that leads back to the main parking lot. After completing the hike, my wife and I rewarded ourselves with an ice cream from the park’s general store. We drove here from Chester, which is near Lassen Volcanic National Park and a good distance from the falls. So, while the hike itself wasn’t life-changing, we really appreciated the opportunity to stretch our legs and get a little cardio workout after a long drive. Plus, of course, the ability to view the amazing Burney Falls from several different vantage points makes this hike a recommended activity.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 20, 2023

This is a remarkable waterfall! It is accessible via a 0.3 mile hike downhill, then the same distance uphill. You do NOT need to take the loop trail if you just want to see the waterfall. Burney Creek emerges from underground, and shortly after that plunges down the waterfall. The water flows both in the usual way, AND by oozing out of the rocks, a fascinating display. Equally impressive is the fact that the water does not stop flowing in the summer. The display in August is still very impressive. There is a visitor center (closed when we got there) and a general store (a pretty good place to pick up provisions). Restrooms are available at the top. There is a $10 use fee per car, but it is worth it. Check it out1

Burney Falls is absolutely spectacular--probably the most beautiful waterfall in California. We went on a July weekday in the late afternoon, and while there were a good number of people there, parking was easy and it never felt crowded.
The walk down to the base of the falls is pretty straightforward, and if you have time, be sure to explore some of the other trails in the park. This is definitely a must-see if you are anywhere in the vicinity.

We went in mid July and the waterfall was very impressive! It's just a short downhill walk from the main parking lot to get to the bottom with plenty of places to take pictures. There are trails that go around the falls and also a trail that takes you to Lake Britton. The only downside for us was that we brought our dog and dogs are not allowed on any of the trails. Other than that, a cool place to visit. There's also a general store near the falls where you can buy snacks and I think it was a $10 fee to park inside.

I have visited waterfalls all over the U.S. and in my humble opinion this is the most beautiful falls I have seen. It is not the biggest or the tallest, but the way the water comes directly out of the wall of the cliff gives it a unique beauty. Every time I am in the area I try to visit. If you are in the area this is a Must See.

The most beautiful waterfall I've ever seen- the temperature drop is so cool as you get closer to the bottom. It's not a steep pathway up/down, but it sure is long. If you have a hard time walking long distances, the walk back up might be difficult. The rocks that get wet from the mist can be slippery, so be careful. DEFINITELY WORTH SEEING!! I could have stayed there for much longer :)

We stayed at Towne Place suite in Redding, California. This is an excellent place to stay with a full kitchen and a free breakfast. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. It has a lot of surrounding eateries as well in the area. And only an hour away from Mac Arthur- Burney Falls California state park.
There’s a general store open in the park to purchase a rain gear if it’s raining. It has a restroom facility. An easy 1.3 mile hike with excellent falls view loop trail. There’s a $10 fee per car entrance and half off if you have a California park’s membership.

We visited this park first and foremost to go see Burney Falls. We were there on Monday morning and had no issues finding a parking spot at all. To see the falls is a short and easy stroll. The falls are stunning , absolute must see. One of the nicest Falls in CA where you can get this close.
We had planned to do some fishing and paddle boarding on lake Britton but there were algae everywhere so we ended up abandoning that plan.

Thank you for visiting. The algae returns in the late summer most years: we are sorry it interfered with your enjoying the lake. Come back again!

First of all a very nice state park. The people at the entrance were very friendly and helpful. We had lunch at a picnic area down by the lake and then walk the trail down to the bottom of the falls. The trail is fairly easy but remember when you go down you must come up. The view is the best at the bottom of the falls for sure. Unfortunately, people who think they are above the rules of the park ruin the site for everyone else. People swimming and taking their dogs down the trail when it is clearly posted that these two things are not allowed. Besides that, the falls are a beautiful place and the trail is well-maintained. Definitely worth the stop if you are in the area.

This was my second time going and it was as good as last time! Last time I went there was a lot of rain but I didn't mind for the scent of the fresh rain afterwards was wonderful and clean. I usually go to Lake Tahoe but the camps are very close together. But these camps are quite spread apart. The falls are very pretty but the thing is the it can get cold. No swimming in the falls for it is too shallow but there is a lake but it is rocky. There is a wonderful trail which is easy but there is a hill you must go up which can be hard. Though over all it is a great place I totally recommend.

In my humble opinion, McArthur Burney Falls is one of the most (if not the most) beautiful waterfall in California!! We never tire of visiting this special place.
We love going down to the base of the waterfall. It is a very short walk down. Make sure to check it up close. Be very careful scrambling over the rocks if you want to get super close. Enjoy!!

Hi. We have booked a campsite in the Rim campground for August. Since August is a busy time at this park I wanted to know if there is an issue getting to the campsite in case the park is full. Their website says “If you arrive to find the entrance closed due to full capacity, please return at a later time - typically after 4:00 p.m”. Is there a separate enterance for people with reservations?
Written June 17, 2023
Sorry, I don't know about the camping situation there. We stayed at a motel in Burney. If you have booked/reserved a campsite it should be waiting for you. The sign at the entrance is for people who just want to see the falls, not campers.

Hi, with the drought in California are the falls still “impressive” and worth the 4 hour trip from San Francisco? Thank you!
Written September 2, 2022
YES! We were there 8/22/22 and the falls were impressive. Before the waterfall, the water runs mostly underground. Unlike most of California's waterfalls, this one is fine in the summertime!
Written September 3, 2022
Im planning to visit in early August. Will the waterfall still have decent flow or just a trickle?
Written July 19, 2022
I hear it has a great flow all year. I don’t think you will be disappointed. Truly a besutiful experience.

We will be coming in our Class C RV, read we will have to park in the lake parking lot, how is the walk to the falls from the parking lot?
Written March 5, 2022
You will have about 1/2 mile walk, partially uphill, to get to the falls.

Are Burney Falls and other falls in the area good this time of year or not much water? Are there Fall colors there now and through first weekend in Nov?
Written October 23, 2018
This time if the year, the falls are not very impressive. Best time to visit is when the snow us starting to melt, April May and early June us the best time to visit.
In northern California the fall foliage is not the best because there are a lot of pine and redwood trees b they don't change colors. Nevertheless, its beautiful to travel anyway. Have a good trip.
Written October 24, 2018
What are the bathroom/shower facilities like? Are they coin operated and do they have a change machine on site?
Written August 15, 2018
There are restrooms near the store, near the lake and in the campground. Showers are available in the campground and they use tokens. Tokens can be purchased in the restrooms near the showers. McArthur Burney Falls Interpretive Association

Is the air smoky at all being close by Redding/Carr fires?
Written August 15, 2018
Yes it’s been extremely Smokey. Today was the first day in a long time that we had blue skies and the sun shining after 12 noon.
Written August 15, 2018
You may not swim in the pool at the base of the falls (it's dangerous!); access to the pool edge and the creek edge for fishing and photos is permitted. The Park includes a large lake, Lake Britton, that is lovely for swimming and for boating. Come visit! McArthur Burney Falls Interpretive Association
