About
This medieval Tuscan castle and winery stands out in Napa Valley as one of its most unusual buildings. At this gorgeous location on the hillside above Calistoga, you can explore the castle's Grand Barrel Room, chapel, and Great Hall, and more curious rooms like the Torture Chamber and dungeon. Pick from a variety of tasting tours to sample some of their award-winning wines, paired with charcuterie, cheeses, and chocolate.
The best time to visit is from August through October to catch Napa’s harvest season—it gets busy so make your reservations early to secure your slot. – Tripadvisor

- marisa k3 contributionsImpressiveNeither my friends nor I are people who would normally go wine tasting, but we wanted to see the castle and get a tour. The tour was fascinating and our guide was awesome! The only odd parts were the directions to check in for the tour, and while we were waiting for our tour to start there was a guide that was complaining very loudly about her guests that she was going to take on her tour :/ Despite that odd beginning, we had a great tour and thought the wine tasting and pairing with the chocolates was really nice! We regret arriving so late in the afternoon because we weren't able to explore more afterward in the dark or take pictures. We would be happy to go back again!Visited December 2022Written January 7, 2023

The castle is so cool, really feels like you are in the old century. We made a tasting reso then got to walk around a bit for pictures. Our wine pourer was great as well, very knowledgeable and super friendly, Dominico. I really loved the wine also, shipping me home a 6 pack and I am excited to sip on it again.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten January 29, 2023
- Z3392XPlauratFairfield, California42 contributionsIntriguingI have toured castles in Ireland and dozens of wineries in California. I found d find this your interesting and informative. Our tour guide, Stephan, was quite charming and humorous. I booked the Diamond Tour, which included a stroll through much of the castle. I think I’d put a time to sit a while in the middle of the tour. I walk with a cane; I was quite tired by the end. I did purchase some hotties of wine.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 7, 2023
- Laneta MRiverside, California4 contributionsTransported in time and spaceAmazing experience altogether! Incredibly authentic interpretation of an ancient Italian castle, believably set in a farming environment complete with goats and chickens. Worth the climb to the parapet where the view is amazing. The tasting room is another level, physically and emotionally. Our sommelier Gerardo was a fount of knowledge and enthusiasm.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten February 8, 2023
- Kristen VSeattle, Washington8 contributionsWine tasting in a California castleNatalia was absolutely fantastic! We did the Cheese & Charcuterie Wine Pairing Tour. Natalia was our guide. She shared her love of Castello di Amorosa and wine. She got us very excited for the Vinyard. The wine is genuinely good. The place is very unique. It's a castle, build like a castle of old with Mason work. Other than the ceilings being higher, plumbing/electrical in wall, and less smooth rocks...this place reminded if castles in Europe. It is a great replica that took decades to build. The wines are unique and very good. Very similar to wines in Italy. I would highly recommend visiting. I hope you get Natalia, she is great!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten March 10, 2023
- jayne6 contributionsBeautiful placeThis is a must-see if this is your first time visiting. We did the seated tasting with the chocolate and charcuterie! I highly recommend this to enhance your experience. We each received generous pours of our 5 tastings, and there are so many options to choose from! After our tasting we were free to wander around the castle. On our way out don't forget to visit the animals including the famous Giacomo!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten March 29, 2023

However Deborah made it fun and a really lovely experience. I have to say all the wines we tasted were delightful and I would highly recommend the wines they produce.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten April 5, 2023

We did the diamond estate guided tour by Natalia, which was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The only thing I didn’t care much for were the actual wines… none could hold a candle to the Jarvis ones we tasted.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten April 29, 2023
- offthemainroadtravels212 contributionsGreat winery in the heart of NapaThe architectural brilliance of mid-evil Europe along with the history is a fascinating time period that holds great interest to me. When there is a winery with a castle that represents the time period I am immediately drawn to it for the look on the outside and inside with the feel for it on the inside. At Castello di Amorosa venturing into the tasting room I feel like this is how it was back in those times. A dark, dimly lit, with a dank like quality just feels special to me. Their wines match the quality and effort put into the castle with quality and care you would expect upon seeing the winery at the bottom of the hill. Their rosé had this light pomegranate raspberry flavor while the zinfandel had complex notes of black current fruit. Their Merlot was an amazing flavor with its notes of cherry, chocolate, and wood from the barrels. Finally the Riesling had excellent notes of peach and apricot flavors finishing nicely with a sweet mixture of both. Parts of Castello di Amorosa were destroyed in the California wild fires of 2020 but the castle remains in tact. As of this writing they are determined to forge ahead and rebuild was lost. If you are in the area you should give them a try as the great wine combined with the castle structure offers a one of a kind wine tasting experience. Kids are welcomed if accompanied by some 21 or over. $$-$$$Visited June 2022Written May 20, 2023

The sommelier was very friendly and knowledgeable.
The wine tasting experience was great, the self guided tour around the castle was absolutely breathtaking.
Highly recommended for families or anyone who has never been to napa valley.

We went here for wine tasting and because we saw how beautiful the grounds are in photos, and yes, we did wine-tasting in a castle. They did not disappoint, it looks like a spot that you see in movies and read in books.
They have indoor and outdoor spots for wine-tasting and they have a good selection of wines to choose from. I personally enjoyed their sweet wines but the charcuterie board that came in a takeaway box was just okay.
They are family-friendly and pet-friendly, and they also have farm animals including an emu. They also have good local finds in the souvenir stores. It's kinda pricey but I personally think that it's worth visiting.

We needed a reservation (no walk-ups), and when we arrived, we were brought right to our table in the outdoor tasting area. Eva R was our wine expert, and she did an excellent job making us feel welcome, attending to the table, and explaining all the different wines that we enjoyed. It was a very relaxed wine-tasting event, and we liked all the different varieties that we sampled. Eva did a great job explaining them to us so that we understood what we were drinking before we sampled it. Our teenage son came with us, and he was able to sample the fancy grape juice too. Fun afternoon!

This is a must when visiting Napa! Make reservations far in advance! If you don’t have a reservation, they will not even let you on the grounds. The venue is spectacular in and of itself! You can roam the castle! And there’s goats and animals too! Once inside when you have your tasting, they are really accommodating, knowledgeable, and the customer service is impeccable! My family, friends, and I had such a good time here! Definitely get the cheese and the chocolate! Food and wine divine! Their wine stoppers are pretty cool if you notice them! They also sell them in the shop as well as many other things and it’s fun to look around down there! We definitely got more than our moneys worth, and will definitely be back when in Napa again!

Castello di Amorosa was an experience all on its own. The self-guided tour was astonishing, and it felt as if we were in another country. The views and setup of the entire facility were to perfection. Prior to our tour of the grounds, where each section of grapes was labeled by the type of wine it would produce, we had a wonderful host, Frederico. He had only been there for 15 days but knew everything about each wine he served us. I love learning about the method in which different varieties of wine are made, and he certainly knew his way around. That being said, I would strongly recommend requesting Frederico for a wonderful experience.
The wines were fantastic, and as a red wine drinker, I loved trying the unique reds, along with mixing them up and starting with a couple of types of rosé-style wines. My husband loved the dessert wines. However, I took note of a few of my favorites. We started off with a smooth, double gold rosé that was delicious, despite being considered a dry wine. If you love a good rosé, the "Gewürztraminer" was simply amazing. It was nothing like any wine I have tried before, and the floral notes really made it unique. As Frederico said, once you try it, you will recognize it easily the next time you have it. I believe this to be 100% true as it was an unforgettable tasting. The "Wine Enthusiast Merlot" was delectable with a nice touch of spice and a smooth finish. We also tried two cabernets, the "James Suckling Cabernet Sauvignon," my personal favorite of the two, which was very full-bodied and smooth. My second favorite cabernet, and one that Frederico mentioned is often tastier as it ages was the "Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon." This was a delicious cabernet. However, as he mentioned, it would be much tastier with a little age.
Overall, I feel as though you are paying in large part for the experience, but it is an experience of a lifetime, and the wines are very good, so it is well worth it. I strongly encourage Castello di Amorosa for both the wine and the experience and time we spent there. It was well worth it. Reservations are a must!
Thank you again, Frederico!

Cool experience. Paolo guided us through a pretty expansive tasting. We upgraded to the red wines and were not disappointed. Wines are Tuscan flavored, not California! We ended up buying a case of the Super Tuscan to ship home. Interesting history of castle. I would recommend a visit to this winery.

Beautiful castle, captivating history on how the castle came to be.
Unfortunately it was too crowded and the service was super slow, despite having a reservation, we had to wait 10-15 minutes to get a table.
The white wines were not chilled, had to ask for breadsticks and we had to wait for awhile after each pour which took away from the experience.
It’s scenic and great for pictures but as a wine lover I would not visit again.
The pours were not worth the money paid for.

Loved the look of this place, medieval and beautiful, but it was pretty noisy! They are probably very popular, hence all of the noise and people, but for tastings and educational tours, I prefer a little more of a quiet atmosphere. I missed a lot of what our guide had to say. Wines were very good, especially the Chardonnay Reserve.

California Experts,
I have booked a tour @ 9.30 AM, what time should i leave specifically considering traffiic from SFO Downtown, Planning. on Nov 20th Saturday
markabaddon

I would expect a minimum of a 2 hour drive from SFO downtown to the Castle. Probably best to expect 2.5 hours. The Castle does ask for you to arrive 15 minutes in advance of your tour, but from what I have seen that is not really necessary.. If you have a 9:30 AM tour, you are probably going to want to leave downtown SF at 7 at the latest
Hello,

Yes. I don’t drink but the others with us do. The price was worth the tour. It’s an interesting building. Their wines are also excellent and cannot be purchased at stores off the property.

I think you can. However, if you do the tour and buy a set of bottles, it would make you eligible for a discount. I'm not exactly sure of the number that you have to buy to be eligible. I bought one Merlot and did not receive a discount.
