This hike kind of attracted me a lot and I absolutely do not regret that we needed to travel so far east in Iceland. It turned out this was one of the most beautiful hikes in the world for me!
Actually, you can make Storurd either from Vatnsskarð or you can start from Njarðvík. We chose Njarðvík as a starting point which is about 4.5 km one way from there. Don ´t worry when you search for Njarðvík in all those curves getting up to the top of the mountain pass - there really is a small parking place in one of the curves for about 8-10 cars. We got there at about 10.30 and still could find a little space for our car.
The hike is epic with wonderful view all the time. And when we got to the highest point and saw an absolutely stunning rocky mountain window on the horizon and a turquoise little lake down in the valley, I couldn ´t believe my eyes. So so beautiful! The truth is we also has a very nice weather and that could have done a lot.
Definitely walk also around the lake, it´s magical!

My wife and I enjoyed this great loop hike of about 18 kilometers. That morning at breakfast we told our host at in the Blabjorg Guesthouse that we were doing this hike, and she let us make up sandwiches for a picnic lunch … very nice. From the guesthouse it was a 15-minute drive up to Vatnsskard Pass. The trailhead is on the left just before the lake at the top of the pass (coordinates 65.561985, -13.991347). Our route was Trail 9 over Geldingafjall Mountain and down to Storurd — a wild, fabulous valley with huge rocks and bright blue lake — then Trail 8 through the valley below Rupnjafell to the road at the bottom of the pass. The upper trail was firm and gravelly but rough, crossing over the top of Geldingafjall Mountain with excellent views all around, then continuing along past lakes and scattered snow fields until descending steeply to Storurd. The bottom trail was milder but quite wet, with many streams to cross. The trails were well marked, with poles every 25 meters or so. We had our picnic lunch at an excellent spot on the lake. Weather was misty and cool until the last hour when some light rain started up. When we got back to the road it became very windy, cold and rainy, and there was a 1.66 mile (2.7 km) slog up the long hill to the trailhead where our car was parked. I went ahead to get the car and was almost there when my wife came up in a car ... a nice local resident had picked her up and we were shortly at the car. Total hike about 11 miles and took 7 hours including lunch and many photo stops. After we got back to the guesthouse we soaked in the hot tubs and drank some beer. A great day!

Stórurð is a magical place though it's highly underestimated by tourists. We were absolutely alone on our trail and it's a pity that such an amazing place is being missed. It really deserves much more attention and recognition. We chose trail no. 10. It's the shortest one - 9 km back and forth, and the views along the way are magnificent. The way to Stórurð is mostly climbing up, but it's rather moderate climb though there are a few steep sections and a few rivers to cross. The last section though is a steep and slippery descend (and then you have to climb it up on your way back) and a rather deep river (about 20cm deep) to cross. You can jump on stones or you can just cross it by foot, but you will get wet so it's recommended to bring an extra pair of socks. Stórurð itself is truly a hidden gem, very unique place. All in all, it was one of my favorite places in Iceland.

I want to post this review more as a warning about how unclear some of the details of the trails are. As someone coming here on holiday, what I read about this landmark was purely from blogs and vague travel guides from Borgarfjordur Eystri. I was under the impression that the total hike time there and back was 3-4 hours. We realized quickly that this simply wasn't true.
Nowhere on the map did it list how long each trail was, so we chose the leisurely and lengthy Trail 8 to see more landscape. This was our first mistake. On trail 8, we saw many absolutely winded and miserable hikers resting or leaving their significant others and family members meters behind them. One couple even asked us how far they had to the car park. Because my fiance and I are in our mid 20s and in shape, we assumed they did not hike often and continued on. It was super easy skill-wise but very boring since the scene did not change much and took a full 4 hours of us sloshing through wet/muddy grass. Not AT ALL what I had read online.
When we reached Storurd, we were wowed by the view but quickly had to continue on since we anticipated another 4 hours hiking back. We ended up choosing trail 9 (only 4.5km) which was a fantastic choice as it was all downhill the way we headed. This part of the hike only took 2 hours, was a breeze, and incredibly scenic. Unfortunately, the trail head for trail 9 ended at the main road three kilometers from trail 8... This was the part where we decided to hitchhike. Cheating, I know.
All in all, this hike would have been far better if we weren't so misinformed. We got VERY lucky we didn't have to hike the last three km up the main road. Had we brought the proper food and gear for a 6 hour hike, I think it would have been far more enjoyable. However, with how many beautiful places are accessible within 2-3 hours hike in Iceland, we agreed that we still would not have chosen the hike had we known it was mainly just 6 hours of mud and decent views until reaching Storuro.

First, you need to know there are three routes and trailheads to Storud. Get a trail map of the area. This is essential. They are sold in Eglissadur at the visitor’s center for 1100 Kr & includes the trails for all the trails in east Iceland. We chose trail 10, the shortest. It was the highlight of our trip to Iceland!!! It is a steady ascent, but only 4 hours total to hike (including stops). The map says 4.5 km one way so about 9-10 km total including a wide swing around the stream at the end. Totally stunning hike that passes so many waterfalls and majestic views. The only hike I’ve been on where I can see snow covered peaks and the sea below at the same time. It is so beautiful every step and the scenery changes quickly. I think this is the best route. The end is a steep descent into a valley and a pretty wide stream/small river. Swing to the far right and there is a narrow portion to get across without getting your feet wet. And then be rewarded by saffire water and huge rocks surrounding you. It was enchanting. We hike with our three boys, 9,10, and 12 and packed plenty of snacks and water. They are really really strong hikers though and have been hiking with us since they were babies. Not sure I’d recommend this for other kids so it’s pretty long and parts are steep. For all others, be prepared and it is super rewarding. Another caveat is, although we packed extra fleeces and rain gear, we had a stunningly beautiful and clear day, mid 60s small breeze. I think it would be still beautiful, but more disappointing on a cloudy or rainy day. You could see the waterfalls along the way, but not the mountains in the distance, which would be a shame. ok, so there are no real giants but you would think there may have been with the large boulders you see when you finally make it to the valley. It's a very intense hike in the rain and fog but so worth it! When the sun made a brief appearance we saw great views of the gateway to hell and the boulders. At the trail head there is a new bathroom and unstaffed information center building with maps and further information about the area and the hikes. We actually met the president of Iceland there doing a photo op with the new facilities. This place is off the beaten path and you probably won't run into another sole on the trail - it was one of our highlights of the trip! We stayed at blabjorg guesthouse after we were done hiking and that was heaven in eastern Iceland!

This is an amazing place to hike to. The views of the blue pools are amazing, let alone on a sunny day.

Stórurð was a hidden gem untill about 40 years ago. You should expect to send there at least 7- 8 hours.

To each their own, but I don’t see how this was worth visiting. We passed a couple headed back and asked how the site was and they replied “...interesting.” Even that was generous. I wish we hadn’t wasted the time and energy to hike there. Perhaps that’s just our own preference. But if I were you, I’d find something else to do/see in your time in Iceland.

How long did you trail take and which trails did you follow? i've heard it can take 6 hours round trip, but I saw someone else say they went for 9 hours and was 18km. Thanks!
