We were both amazed that the Avenue of the Giants was so close to the main 101 Highway and yet it was advertised very little. You could see the 101 most of the way along the Avenue of the Giants and yet, it was like we were in a completely different place. The giant redwoods are awe-inspiring and really make... More

Joined the 199 in Grants Pass Oregon and connected with the 101 in Crescent City, CA. This is a very nice drive, although in a couple of places the 101 were down to 1 lane due to construction, which caused an additional 15 – 20 drive time. South of Crescent City, you start hitting the Redwood Forests. There are numerous... More

There are several groves of giant trees along 101 in this area. Take advantage and enjoy these magnificent giants. The beach area near Trinidad (20 miles north of Eureka) is well worth stopping for - absolutely gorgeous. The herds of elk can often be see near Elk Meadows on Highway 101. The whole area from the Oregon border all the... More

Drove 101 from Oregon border to San Francisco and the only word is "wow"! Giants, giants everywhere and so awesome. Stop at the parks, drove Avenue of Giants, wanted to drive/hike Newton Drury Parkway but a limb, yes a limb, not a tree closed the parkway. It is all awesome, however. Stop and appreciate!

This is such a beautiful hi-way. It's a worth the journey. There are many places to stop and hike, from small trails to longer ones with information on size and age of trees as well as other info. There are many campgrounds along the way. The Avenue of the giants is a road that follows hi-way 101 and it is... More

No matter how often we drive this way, it is always breathtaking. This time it rained and we still loved the scenery.

What a great road. 100% improvement in road in Last 20 years. Fun, hardly any traffic. Trees are spectacular. You leave what most people consider northern California, San Francisco which is actually middle California, get up here and it's a whole different world. Quiet and friendly.

We live off US Highway 199 near the entrance to Jed Smith Redwoods State Park and travel this road almost daily. The sections of 199 which travel through a bit of the park near Crescent City, or the sections to the east heading toward Oregon which follow the Smith River, offer spectacular views. We often travel the US 101 portion... More
