This was a family event that I heard from my coworker (who lives 20 miles away) did and insisted on doing. I did it with my 1 year old and we were all snuggled up who fell asleep in my arms, during the hour-long (?) ride outside. Wear your hat, gloves and sit back and sip your home-made hot cocoa.... Our family does this every year and started making this our holiday tradition. Train of lights is usually a good experience. Our family usually goes out of Niles Canyon the 4:30 pm train but with the popularity of this attraction we were only able to get the 7:30 pm train out of Sunol.. This was the worst time we had.... I remember traveling on the train from L.A. to Berkeley in 1948 the clickety, click , the sleeper car and the delicious food. Again i traveled from Fremont to Toronto in 1960. For a wonderful summer trip thru Niles Canyon with a sip of wine and little snacks, on the Halloween train or for the grandchildren the Santa train with... More

This is not an authentically restored historic ride but it is not a regular train either. It's something in the middle. However, you'll see a beautiful canyon, we'll be exposed to a lot of history and everyone around you - both the fellow riders and the volunteers are having so much fun and enjoying the ride - it makes it... It was a summer day and we enjoyed the Niles Canyon Railway. The train was full of happy people. Its nice to ride on a warm summer day. The train runs between Fremont and Sunol as an excursion train. They also have a polar express train for the Christmas holiday time.

This train ride through Niles Canyon is awesome! It's so festive during the holidays, as the colorfully lit train winds around each of the canyon's curves.

We took the Christmas train with our friends just Before Sunset. On the way back it was dark and the whole train lit up. It was absolutely fun and fantastic with Christmas music, a snack bar, Santa Clause, young children and families having a wonderful time. There are different kinds of cars those inclosed and open-air cars. The atmosphere was... More

Though it is short journey, nature along the way is good. We went in winter, hopefully it will be much better in spring and summer. Go early to get seats with best view. Open air cars are good. Overall all cars are maintained cleanly.

We took our two grandchildren on the ride and we each had a wonderful time. The all-volunteer operation runs well and their uniforms enhance the experience with realism. The journey through the narrow canyon is pleasant and historical. Riding on clean, maintained vintage coaches and open air cars was a delight.

The Niles Canyon Railway is a fun trip back into the history of the transcontinental railroad, the early Southern Pacific and other regional railroads. The trip is a fun 5 miles each way through the beautiful canyon, past historic railroad equipment and all narrated by knowledgeable volunteers. I really enjoyed the trip, my teenager, not as much.
