About
Amphora is a small family winery producing a variety of wines in small lots of 100-200 cases. Some of these wines are fermented and/or aged in clay Amphorae that were hand-made in Italy, others are fermented in 1 ton bins, punched down by hand, then aged in traditional oak barrels. Currently the red varietals produced include Aglianico, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Malbec, Merlot, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, Syrah, Tannat, Tempranillo, Teroldego and Zinfandel. We also produce a white wine, Vermentino, a sparkling Blanc de Noirs, and a Rose. The owner/winemaker is hands-on and is at the winery most days. He frequently will be the one to do a tasting, or if not, at least come and say hi and answer any questions. Reservations are recommended, but not required.

To get the obvious out of the way first, the wines were superb. In color, in aroma, in brightness, in balance, and in varietal purity.

As for the experience, I've wracked my memory for a wine-tasting experience as satisfying as that at Amphora.

Had the wines not been superb, all the bells and whistles in the world wouldn't have made a difference. But to taste the wines over a long period of time--not rushed, in other words: the opposite, in fact--with pretty much every facet of the operation brought to light, integrated into the experience of tasting, was an enlightening and extremely satisfying experience.

Not to drone on, but enlightening may be the key word here, because both wines and the makers of the wine were truly enlightening.

I can't recommend Amphora highly enough.

I've been continuously drinking wine around the world for the past 4 years since my last review Amphora...Amphora still has the best wine anywhere. Austria, Portugal, Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Napa, Temecula...Amphora is still the best! Its not the cheapest, but the best wines are never cheap. You can get some very good wines for $30-60+. If I was a local, I'd definitely join the wine club.

Also, the owner Rick, is still an incredible and fun guy to be around. Hopefully he's there when you visit!

I’ve been a PS fan for decades starting with Concannon back in the 80’s - but this one blew our minds! EVERYTHING one would want in a *BIG* red - front, mid, back palate; smooth mouth feel; lasting finish... every sip was remarkable. The 2010 Amphora Bevitt/Walcott is truly EXCEPTIONAL!!!

I have been to literally hundreds of wineries covering almost every wine region in CA along with the Pacific NW. Amphora has got to be my favorite. Rick Hutchinson is the owner/winemaker and chances are if you visit, he will be there. He makes well over a dozen varietals, many of which you don’t find often. One of my favorites is his Barbera but to be honest I have not tried one of his wines that I did not think was great. In my opinion, his wines are the best around and much more reasonable on the wallet then the fancy labels over in Napa!
Stop in for a visit but give yourself some time to enjoy his wines as he has plenty to choose from!

The terra cotta amphorae made in Italia brings a different style to the wine. Had a generous tasting and no other customers just before the holidays. Aglianico was my favorite because it is uniquely Italian. Every bottle is priced at just under $40.

We sought this place out because of the name, having learned about amphora in a viticulture class. We went early in the week when they first opened. We weren't planning to stay the hour and a half we did, but we were the only ones there at that time. We learned a lot and tasted wonderful wine, some from varietals we had not heard of. Because this tasting room is one of a group, it is not on an estate. That said, a group can go to several different tasting rooms in one trip. We walked out with a case of wine and a big smile on our faces!

My first trip to Amphora 14 years ago was the result of liking their name. This trip was to return to fabulous red wines. I was not disappointed. In addition to the reds, I got to taste a few delicious whites. Amphora has even taken "box wine" to the next level. The package is not just for the typical "jug wine". It makes plenty of sense for those that are affected by oxidation.

I look forward to my next visit and my next Barbera.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff and Rick the owner/winemaker knows his stuff. Good rose and a great Chardonnay and Blanc de Blanc sparkler. Yes a great sparkling wine from Dry Creek!!! All the reds are well crafted and delicious. 2014 Syrah is killer. Lots of different varietals and all are well done balanced wines Fairly priced for the quality. $10 tasting fee well worth it. (FYI: my wife and I are former wine growers and wine makers so we know a little about wine and highly recommend this winery).
