The ancient center of Pingyao is great for wandering around. A guide is not necessary, especially since a guide will only take you to the (I believe 22) highlights, which are nice, but it is not necessary to visit all. Don't forget that you can...More

Pingyao is a fantastic ancient town which still hold great history. Best time to do it is either early morning around sunrise or at night when it's all lit up. Great Wall with lots to see and many photo opportunities.

On our way to Xian, we did a half day tour of Pingyao. Like other old towns, many of the old structures are now used as restaurants and stores. Unlike other old towns, however, Pingyao is not crowded with tourists so one can still get...More

We spent 4 nights in Pingyao Old Town and visited all the sites the town has to offer plus the Wang courtyard which is out town. The town itself is charming and quaint. Very manageable and pedestrian friendly.

Lovely city, halfway Beijing and Xian. We enjoyed it, though the attractions are not that worthwhile. But the restaurants are a delight

Out of the 4 ancient cities in China, Pingyao is really the biggest and simply the best kept. It's really not far from Beijing or Datong, but we did not see many foreign tourists, which was a surprise to us. In and around this old...More

Within the walls of this ancient town lies a perfect balance between the old and new, as you stroll through this town you'll be amazed with the architectural styles and feel like you're in a kungfu movie. Many shops and eating places line the streets...More

ancient city is quite charming & best savored early morning or late afternoon/early evening before/after the bus loads of tourists arrive. Lots of small museums to wander through. Walking along the wall gives you a different perspective to the town. Take lots of water as...More

Depends on what you like. Like the others said, if you go on these dates definitely make sure you have everything booked in advance and not much is left to chance lodging- and transport-wise. If you like peace and quiet and... More
