Not too far from the old city, it is interesting if you have easy transportation or in a group tour, otherwise, I would not go out of my way for this dusty temple. There is a weird torture room on the right side, very dark, so many people miss it. Better if you have a torch light.

Stunning temple. Although it should receive UNESCO money it is not restored to its ancient splendor... Such a shame as if fully restored would be an amazing site. Still worth the visit. When we visit there were just a few other tourists.

We hired a taxi and went on a 20 trip to this temple. I must admit we were surprised of the buildings and statues. We enjoyed this visit very much.

It was interesting visiting this temple, but the please be aware that you are only allowed to take pictures at the first building and there are cameras everywhere. The place looked in need of a good clean and upgrade. It’s on the tourist route because it is so close to Pingyao - only about 7 Km. Some of the statues were huge and it was interesting to see how they built them. Definitely a few unique ones amongst the multitudes.

a beautiful temple. having lots and lots of sculptures. very different than any other buddhist temples i saw in china.
great if you go with a guide who can explain you everything you see. the best thing about this place for me was, not much tourist and felt very peaceful.

This temple complex, with it's hundreds of statues is fascinating, though the sheer number of statues is a little overwhelming and having some background on the history of Buddhism in China (or a good guide) is necessary to really appreciating the Temple. Visit on a clear day, as there is no lighting inside the buildings, so even at the best of times, seeing the details of the smaller statues is difficult.

Don't miss the Shuanglin temple before you leave Ping Yao just to enjoy the exquisite quiet atmosphere of this so old temple with almost no visitor to come and see the so famous Godess with one thousand arms and other old temples around who never changed style and even have kept the same dust still on the statues since centuries ago.

this temple is on the way to Pingyao High Speed Rail Station. It is well worth leaving Pingyao about another hour early then planned and make this a stop on the way out of town. Though the place are poorly lite, and many of the statutes are covered in dust, it does not impact your enjoyment of the beauty of these centuries old clay statues. The temple does not have an English speaking tour guide, but there are plenty of articles / webpage written about Shuanglin Temple's statues that you can read while looking at them, so its not a big deal. Go visit it, well worth the extra trip.

Depending on where else you have been you might well be 'tempted out'! But this is definitely one of the more interesting ones.

I wouldn’t recommend going there even this temple were in the middle of the old city. I was done visiting it after like 5 minutes and not having seen anything worth taking a picture. Everything there looked shabby and poorly conserved. Pretty much everywhere in China you can find Buddhist temples, that look way more interesting. If you really have to go there for some reason, make sure your taxi driver waits for you outside, otherwise it will be even more frustrating.
