This is smaller than Xian City Wall but more original. Xian's wall was renovated, wider, and larger. Where Pingyao Wall is more petite and cozy. No need to walk around it once, take a small stroll on a subset of the wall should be sufficient.

The old city wall is completely restored and you can walk or run (as I did) the 6 km on top of the wall. There are nice views on the old city.

This is a nice walk if you have the time. I just went up and down the wall. You have a nice view of the roofs of the houses around. Nice escape from the tourist horde if you need it.

The wall surrounds the old town. It's only faced on the one side with the reverse side of packed earth exposed to the elements. Not as big as Xian city wall nor as high.

Unfortunately we had a ready walked the Xian City Wall just days before walking the Pingyao wall. So, we weren't as impressed as we might have been if we hadn't. Saying that, it was lovely to escape the crazy busy town for a while and...More
