Impressive from the cliff top but so much more from the water.
Kayaks can be rented or tours booked at La Jolla Shores which will get you closer to and into the caves with close up contact with seal lions and fish. Highly recommended.

January 2022 I made a dive to the La Jolla Caves through SCUBA San Diego. It was great. As an older, east coast boat diver, who had never done a shore entry in surf conditions, I had a wonderful time in a completely new environment (and temperature).

Shore entry in surf was new to me, and I had a free-flow from my second reg. The life guards immediately notified me of the situation -- nice to have over-watch. The dive was shallow, about 25-30 feet max, but it's a great experience having seals zipping around you as you enjoy the other underwater life. The "caves" are really a swim-through. We had lots of surge, but I wouldn't have missed it.

SCUBA San Diego provides good service, a great guide, and were very flexible.
Cole (my guide) is an accomplished diver and a great guide. I enjoyed the kelp, sea lions, fish, and everything else along with the caves. I had scheduled a follow-on night dive with Cole at La Jolla Canyon, but a last minute conflict I forced me to call the dive. Ron (the owner of SCUBA San Diego) had no problems sending me a certificate for full credit for the next time (soon, I hope) I come out. Being in business since 1968, I felt very comfortable accepting the certificate. All-in-all, a great experience. The Caves make for a great dive and I highly recommend SCUBA San Diego! And HIGHLY recommend Cole.

We actually did not go into the caves but admired them from afar. We saw a lot of people snorkeling and kayaking. The water was beautiful. We also got to see some Sea Lions laying around enjoying the sun.

When we went there, there was some construction going on, so we had to park the car on the street up or down from where actual location of the store as the entrance. Just reminding you all, you have to go down over 140 steps of stairways, means you have to come back up. Our legs were so sore later that day at night and the next day for climbing those steps up.

We walked through this area to see the seals, which were plentiful. Fun watching them interact and seeing waves crashing onto the rocks.

Best experienced on a kayak or swimming in the warm, summer water! The sea caves have plenty of flat-top rocks swimmers can sit or stand on. Which means that when the tide is low, your kayak can easily get beached on the rock....fair warning.

This was an awesome visit. Its a real hassle to get parking though but once you take care of that its a really cool experience. You can go kayaking to go into the caves or go snorkeling. You can just relax and watch it all (which is what I did). There are a few restaurants there as well.

Incredible excursions. Loved seeing the caves. Adjacent to the ocean so you get all the best views. They are lively and lovely. I was in awe of the beauty.

We parked in a hotel's lot across from the caves for $10 an hour since parking is at a premium near the Coves and caves. The seals and sea lions were plentiful on a sunny February day. We paid and signed waivers at the Cave Store to go down to a platform open to the sea within the rock cave. Hard to say it's not worth it, but you walk down a flight of 145 steps to arrive at a platform about 15 x15 feet. It's dark and felt kind of like a let down. There was a seal on the inside of the cave but there is little light to see. The tunnel down is very tight in spots. People over 5 ft 7 inches had to duck in spots. Then back up 145 steps. Steps can be sandy and slippery hence the waiver. Certainly doable for most people. There is an outside platform on the outside of the cave for viewing. All in all a wonderful visit and highly recommend going to see coves and caves.
