Coming from the UK we have had several nature programs covering the Sea Otters in the Monterey bay area and specifically how over recent years a few females with their pups have moved into living in the security of the marina, so it was great to take a stroll down the Coast Guard Pier and see a couple of these... If you want to (safely) encounter the sea lions that inhabit the Monterey Bay, this is place to do it. A very secure chain link fence separates "us and them" and it's a hoot to watch them frolic and sunbathe.

We walked the pier early in the AM and saw several sea otters and harbor seals playing, eating, and just hanging out. Walk all the way tot he end of the pier to see the picture that is associated with this site.

You must take the time to walk right to the end to see hundreds of seals and sea lions. They are so funny to watch. The noise is unbelievable. Plenty of good photo opportunities.

Take the time to walk out and see the hundreds if not thousands of seals out there. Great views from there as well.

An excellent place to see seal lions, seals, otters, and several varieties of birds, including herons, egrets, and Pelicans. The sea lions "pose" right along side the pier and are continually barking.

Definitely worth a walk down if you're in the area fantastic to see all the sealions and there are loads of them. It was fab to see them in the wild where they should be.

Awesome. Happened across this place whilst driving to the acquarium and well worth a stop. Parking $2 and can then spend time watching the sea lions and sea otters swimming about. If you like sea life then you can't really beat this, particularly given it is as good as free.

It's amazing how many seals sit on this pier barking all day and generally posing for photos. You can view this pier by walking out (but be prepared for the strong fishy smell), or slightly further back on a boat or from the viewing area at Old Fisherman's Wharf. If you are looking to see and photograph seals though, this... More

Nearly Free ($2.00 parking), easy walking, and awesome to see animals in their own environment. Don't give money to the aquarium to see animals in tanks, experience them in the open. It's an easy park and an easy walk to see an entire population of sea lions. Just follow the barking :)
