I first hiked up Granite Chief in the spring before the snow was fully melted. I took the Squaw Valley Ski Corp Gondola up, hiked south to the exit on the west advising one NOT to proceed, then down a clear view path and then up toward the top of Granite Chief. The first time I had no idea how... More

Throughout time we've hiked in group settings in this wildernesses area so magnificent! There are glacier carved valleys with granite formations and trails through meadows. Elevation ranges from 5000-foot valleys to 9000-foot peaks. The Pacific Crest trail system passes through this area. This past weekend I hiked The Five Lakes Trail. There were many people on that trail due to... More

Did a near sun-down hike on this trail. It was great, away from the lights of the cities and lake resorts. Not too difficult and has beautiful scenery.

Hardly any one was in this great ski area during SKI WEEK especially in the late afternoon. This is all black diamond although some are groomed.

Granite Chief has mostly expert trails but a strong blue comfortable with bowl skiing can find a few trails to enjoy whilst the cliff hangers in the group separate and then meet up at the chair the chair is a slow triple so be prepared for a line

The Granite Chief slope is a great advanced intermediate slope at Squaw Valley, but be very prepared for icy patches. If you lose it, you slide quite a way. Wear your helmet. If you are in doubt, don't go up the lift.

It's about a 5 - 6 hour loop/9 miles if you take the free (to hikers) tram ride down, otherwise add another hour if you hike down - the trail down starts below the old tennis courts and isn't marked. The trail up is to the right of the village fire station and is poorly marked initially, but is OK... More

Okay, okay, okay, around Squaw Valley it’s mainly a ski area - but the mountains surrounding the valley with the Granite Chief Wilderness and beyond are also just simply breathtaking for hiking and horseback riding. The views from, say Emerald Pass with the memorial monument on the peak are a thrilling 360° sensaround panoramic vista with Lake Tahoe laid out... More
