The Museum’s collection is a treasure trove of maritime paintings, ship models, and artifacts that rival some of the finest European and U.S. collections. Sumptuous seascape paintings by 17th century Dutch masters, 18th and 19th century English Romantics, French Impressionist painter Boudin, and unparalleled contemporary maritime painters complement the finest museum-quality ship models on the West Coast, including the Marple Models: nine exquisite, highly detailed scratch-built warships; and intricate “bone models” carved by French soldiers held captive during the early 19th century Napoleonic wars. The Upper Deck hosts interactive contemporary exhibits, featured temporary exhibitions, art receptions, and engaging Third Thursday lectures.

Museum windows look out over the Channel Islands Harbor’s passing sailboats and gorgeous views. The Channel Islands National Park sits just offshore, and the sea lions on the dock out front add tremendous character to the traffic stream. Visitors are invited to view the art on their own or take advantage of the museum’s knowledgeable, free guides.

If your idea of a maritime museum is limited to rusty anchors and old salty sea dogs, come and discover a vibrant cultural venue in the Channel Islands Harbor that celebrated local maritime achievements through contemporary interactive exhibits and displays outstanding examples of centuries of fine art from around the world.

I recently moved to Oxnard and I got a flier advising me that the museum was free on 3rd Thursday of each month. So I thought I would give it a try. Other museums I have been to have more variety of nautical items. But what makes this museum so interesting is that the main focus is on wood models... More

Having been to the maritime museums in San Francisco and San Diego, where you walk through various interesting ships, we figured this would be something similar. Not true. This museums exhibits paintings and models, mostly of sailing ships. It is a very neat attraction, just not what we were expecting. The art is stunning and the models are fascinating. We... More

My wife and I visited this museum and were really surprised with the facility. It is a small museum, but perfect for a family to visit. We completed seeing the museum in about an hour. There is a nice film (narrated by Kevin Costner) and a wonderful hands on demonstration of tide pools (by the park ranger on duty). The... More

We visited the museum on a weekday. Bernie, a docent, offered us a tour and he certainly knew his subject. The museum's collection of maritime paintings and handmade ships is impressive. The museum had the fortune to be associated with a premier collector of maritime paintings and probably the premier model shipbuilder ever, so their collection is exceptional.. We really... More

This museum is small and a little hard to find. But it is a treasure. The museum guides have so many really interesting stories and facts about early ships in general and they have fabulous models and exhibits. There is also a good amount of fact about the local area. We have also had a reception there and so the... More

The San Salvador, a replica Spanish Galleon built in San Diego, was docked at the Museum while on her debut sail along the California Coast. The Museum's docents were all very friendly and informative about the ship and about the Museum's collections. Though the Museum is small, it has an amazing amount of art and model ships in its collection,... More

Ahoy, matey! This little museum has an amazing collection of maritime paintings and models of ships. Many Dutch and Flemish artists are represented in the collection. They also have a 18th century canon, a collection of scrimshaw carvings and some very cool modern art. Docents are on duty to fill you in on the historical background of pieces in the... More
