I live in Central California. On Sept 6, the temp was supposed to be 113 degrees. I decided it was a good day to drive to the coast. I've been wanting to see John Denver Memorial Beach for some time, so I finally went. It was so peaceful there. After reading the memorial plaque (and singing the song whose lyrics are inscribed) I sat on a bench and just enjoyed the peace, the ocean breeze, the temperature of 76 degrees, and the local wildlife (gulls and squirrels). Unfortunately, I did have to go home, but I thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

Seaside memorial plaque for John Denver near where his plane went down. Near seaside walking paths and Oceanside benches. A nice place to reflect and relax and to honor John Denver's memory.

This is a simple plaque honoring one of the best musicians of the 20th century. The beach this monument graces is just beautiful. I wish I could say the same about the plaque. It is very difficult to read and was placed in a section that doesn't really stand out to passers-by. I took several photos and the one attached is edited so it's a bit easier to read the text.

We have driven along this coastal road many times and never knew this memorial was there. To find it, just click the map in this app and it was spot on!
I remember growing up and listening to John Denver so I wanted to find and see this memorial. True, it’s just a plaque in a rock but for fans, it’s worth the time to stop and see it while in the area. RIP John Denver

If you are a JD fan and in the area, it is worth a visit. We were in Monterey Bay and drove the short way. We struggled to find it at first as two cyclists decided to use it as a bike rack!!! After pointing out it was a memorial they happily placed their bikes elsewhere. Made my husband's holiday as he is a massive fan.

John Denver was piloting his Long-EZ kit plane on October 12, 1997, when he tragically crashed into Monterey Bay near the shore at this site. The scenic beauty of this area is reason enough to visit the memorial plaque and walk the beach and its rocky shoreline. For all John Denver fans, it is haunting to visit this site, where I actually witnessed his body and the wreckage being pulled nearby from the water on that fateful day. Access to the memorial plaque is easy onto a turn-off along Ocean View Boulevard.

While I find it nice that someone offered a tribute to an American Icon and the area is beautiful, I also found myself asking; WHY?? It is a rock with a plaque on it!!
The area is a must but unless you are a huge John Denver fan, this is something that can be skipped.

Yes, it took a few minutes to find the John Denver memorial. There was another plaque on a rock close by. It was almost like a game to find it, but once we did , we thought it was quite a touching tribute. I am posting a photo of the plaque in Oct. 2019, to give a better idea of how to find it. The day we visited the memorial, we spoke with a couple of local John Denver fans who were also there. One was playing John Denver music on her car stereo. They told us that every October 28 there is a gathering around the plaque and the carved log, to honor the artist. BUT the log somehow got moved in the past few storms, winding up about 70 feet from the plaque. Mike & I tried to lift the log, but couldn't. Really a formality, though, as Denver's plane crashed further up the beach, and not on that exact spot. If you are in Pacific Grove and a big John Denver fan, well worth the trouble to visit.

This rock with placque marks the lookout into Monterey Bay where the Denver plane crashed. The view is lovely, but don't make a special trip to see this unless you really, really really are a John Denver fan. Make a stop where Acropolis meets Ocean drive if you are walking along the recreation path and take a picture.

Not much to say about the memorial as it is a brass plaque attached to a rock that you'd probably miss if you didn't stumble on it by accident. It is not something you'd go out of your way to see unless you are a hardcore JD fan and it certainly does not do JD credit or the terrible tragedy that took his young life.
