We visited early on New Year’s Eve and absolutely loved walking throughout the garden exploring the Troll sculptures! The Trolls were amazing! They are beautiful placed throughout the gardens. I wish they could keep a few on permanent display because they are amazing!
The Trolls are there only through mid January, so get there fast!

I have lived in the South Bay all my life. Finally decided to visit and even signed up for a membership. What a great and beautiful place!

Had a lovely Sunday morning with a friend at the garden! The butterflies, most from Costa Rica and South America were on full display! Their striking vibrant colors were lovely! Further, the roses are in full bloom and a display of flaming statues filled with begonias are enchanting.

Went to the Glow event last evening. Not bad but not at all what we expected. Most obvious was that there is no connection to Christmas; no Xmas music, decorations or motif. Only a very small area of the property is set up with the lights so it's not as much to see as one might think. It was generally just lots of lights in trees. Nice, but nothing groundbreaking. If you go be sure to take your phone with a light as you will need it to see the path in certain parts. Some gentle pathway lighting would have been welcome. In several places the path is hard to see because placement of some lights shines right into your eyes.
Strange selection of music: Pink Floyd near the cactus gardens! All in all, the event needs some fine-tuning and expansion. Not a ripoff but a bit overpriced for what is presented.

Attended the Glow tonite. What a huge disappointment especially since they send you emails of photos and what not to miss. Doesn't look anything like the pics. Descanso Gardens has nothing to worry about.

My Father's Day treat was an afternoon spent at the garden, the highlight being the SOAR Tropical Butterfly Pavilion! The brochure showed about 20 different tropical species and it appeared that all were present!
We had 3 visit times (there were 3 in our group), however the staff was kind enough to allow all 3 of us to enter at the same time.
Aside from watching these beautiful creatures flutter around, it was a kick to have them land on us, and it was especially enjoyable to watch the little kids try and hold still for a butterfly to land on them (AND to refrain from touching them!).
The sign recommends that you wear colorful attire that will attract them to you, and that worked (See the photo).
Right now, in addition to the butterflies, the rose garden is heavy with beautiful blooms! You won't want to miss it!
Enjoy the day... Use sunscreen... And a hat will certainly be helpful!

Mixed thoughts... Some beautiful sections, but some annoyances as well. We arrived and after waiting in line to get tickets, we were told that they are cash only right now (due to COVID) and that cards can be used online. We didn't have enough cash, so we had to get out of line and navigate their difficult website to purchase tickets online. Also, despite national COVID precautions relaxing (it is late May 2021), this place is still very COVID-cautious. They place desks in front of the ticket teller to create more distance, and require everyone to wear masks at all times while *outside* in their gardens. This was very difficult given the heat and did not make much logical sense when 99% of the time, we were walking alone in the park... Also, no lake or river, just dry beds. Very confusing layout. Best part was the rose garden, in my opinion. Butterfly exhibit had a separate entrance fee so we did not go in.

The Blue Morphos and multi-colored monarchs flittering about my head at the butterfly enclosure were just a sampling of the magic during my visit last week to these wonderful gardens. I spent nearly two hours wandering the various trails through multiple ecosystems -- pines, redwoods, cactus and succulents, lawns and landscaped garden areas. Hundreds of roses, irises, sunflowers and poppies were blooming throughout. Plus, I got a good walk in, following the paths to eight giant modern sculptures. COVID safety precautions were in place; but despite the timed entry, it seemed like there were too many people and children in the butterfly enclosure to be able to keep distance.

Pretty botanic gardens with easy paved paths and picnic areas. It’s currently open during covid and you must make reservations ahead of time. Tickets are $15 and there is a student discount (as of March 2021). Parking is free and available on their lot. You can bring your own picnic items and food into the garden. There’s a food concession stand open but it’s only for drinks and chips (no hot food was being served when we went). You can also have them set up a picnic for you - we saw some reserved picnic areas that were a bohemian garden fairy’s dream.
The paths are all clearly laid out and you can do a lot of meandering. There are a lot of families with small children as well as couples. Bathrooms are available after you go in through the entrance, but they have closed off some stalls due to covid in order to promote social distancing. Small scale events are still being held, and we saw an intimate wedding photo shoot when we were leaving. All the garden areas are gorgeous and there are a ton of benches to sit and take it all in. It’s impressive that this area is also sitting atop a former landfill site!
