Nature at its best
May 2021
Looking for something to do, ventured to Phelan, California, for a day of exploring the area and doing a bit of hiking. Phelan is a small community located along the 15 Freeway in the Cajon Pass area of Southern California. Situated just off the freeway, one will find an area of large white sandstone rocks that have been exposed over the years due to tectonic plate (earthquake) activity. One section is 200 feet high. These rocks have been named Mormon Rocks. The rocks received their name from Mormon settlers, moving to the Los Angeles Basin from Salt Lake City, Utah during the 1850. Perfect location to do some exploring and hiking. Exited the 15 Freeway at CA Highway 138 and headed west to the Mormon Rock Fire Sation. Parking and primitive restroom facilities are available. No fee to park at the Mormon Rocks Fire Station. Located at the rear of the fire station is a marked 1-mile looped trail (Moron Rocks Interpretive Trail – 6W04), that leads to the rock formations. Beginning trail elevation is 3360 feet and is rated easy. The trail has several switchbacks. Strongly recommend all hikers wear appropriate long pants, hiking boots, and a hat. Even though the trail is only 1-mile round trip, be sure to bring plenty of water. It gets extremely hot in the brush and there is no shade. The trail winds the through. manzanita, yucca, chamise, sage brush and other high-desert plants. Plants will scratch up your bare legs. As you continue to follow the trail, you will be provided with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Use caution on the trail, as rattle snakes are present. Sharp rocks will tear up your feet. Flip flops are a no-no. The rocks formations are riddled with cave and crevices, Wildlife (i.e., coyotes, burrowing owls, lizards, snakes, and tarantulas abound in the area. The area is ideal for birdwatching, as hawks, ravens and swifts have made nests in the crevices of the rocks. Be advised there are several different rock formations in the area. To the east side of the fire Station there is an entrance which will take you to the larger series of rocks. Fun day exploring, viewing nature, and partaking in a short hike. Well worth an hour or two of your time.

This was amazing. We saw so many of white rocks. They named it: The Mormon Rocks.

How did it came here? No one knows.

We stood amazed with that!

Still, it is a great place to visit it.

A must see!

Exploring the rocks north of hwy 138
May 2020
I explored the Mormon Rocks on the north side of hwy. 138. There is no official trail on this side of the highway, but there are dry washes, 'user' trails and dirt roads to follow. I was there in early May and there were lots of wildflowers in bloom. It is beautiful

Walk on a major earthquake fault!
Jan. 2020 • Family
Nice to take a break and walk on a roadtrip. Sometimes these unusally-shaped rocks formed by the San Andreas Fault are snow-covered.

Natural rock formation
Dec. 2018 • Couples
We did not explore the trail but only
observed the rocks from the parking
area. It would have been nice to have
a sign or display to explain what we
were looking at.

Watch for snakes

Beautiful place but small rattlesnakes are in the sandy wash. YBe aware. When spotted we went back to the car. Just look around when hiking.

Just outstanding formations Morman Rocks along Hiway 138
Nov. 2017 • Couples
We are riding on hiway 138 toward Wrightwood, and these beautiful formations are along side of the road. They are just out there in the middle no where. Hiking trails and little caves. There are a few huge mountains and then a few smaller ones. It is quite an awesome site..

Beautiful hiking in an unusual natural area
Feb. 2017 • Family
The Mormon Rocks look like they may have been poured in eons past. It's fun to hike and there are trails to follow. Free off-road parking is available. Beautiful views of the desert and good for familys, but recommended for older kids. We hiked with some inexperienced nine-year olds who got a little scratched up. If your kids are already hikers/rock scramblers, no problems.
