Sobon make a nice variety of foothills wines and they are worth a taste, although there are superior wine tasting spots in Amador County. What is unique about Sobon, and what motivated me to revisit, is the outstanding winery and agricultural museum. Established in 1846, the winery was one the earliest in California. Still intact, it forms the basement area the winery. It includes antique wine fermenters and large barrels as well an assortment of antique wine making equipment. In and adjacent agricultural structure there are additional antique wine presses and antique farming equipment. The adjoining grounds have lovely historic vineyards. Definitely worth a stop.

I've been to this place many times and strongly recommend visiting it if you are a Zin lover visiting Amador county. The wines are balanced and excellent quality. They have gotten a lot of medals and awards. The service is very personal and attentive. Their free tasting includes very good variety of wines but I also recommend purchasing a reserved tasting for $5. It includes three excellent wines, a glass and a visit to their sister Shenandoah Valley winery. Don't forget to visit their two very nicely organized museums.

Excellent wine selection. We visited on a Monday, if you have a chance it's a great day to visit. Lack of crowds, and time to enjoy the wine tasting without distractions. We happened to visit at the same time as new friends we met at our Inn so we were comparing notes. This was our first time at Sobon, but it won't be our last.

As an added attraction, Sobon Estate shows off their family history farming in the Amador county 100 years ago. You see all the equipment in the farm house and all the equipment used on their land. Fascinating to see how things had to be done back then from seed cleaners to spinning wheels, hand tools to plows, stoves to pots and pans. They also have some 125 year old vines that they preserved so you can see how big they were. All to all of this some excellent wine you have a must stop on the wine circuit in Amador county. We got a case of their Syrah that was lovely and silky smooth.

In addition to being historically interesting this winery offered complimentary tasting of fascinating wines presented by an extremely knowledgeable staff member. It provided a welcome contrast to the all too common winery experience of staff parroting on in the belief that visitors lack any knowledge or olfactory sense. All the wines tasted were impressive (rousanne, barbera, a couple of zinfandels and a tannat)
