If you like railroads, this is a must. Sacramento was an important point in the building of the transcontinental railroad. This museum chronicles that plus much more. They have great exhibits of railroads throughout both the 19th and 20th centuries. Fascinating for young and old....More

If you are a avid Rail Road fan, this is your place! Very extensive displays and setups. More trains than anywhere I have ever been and all inside. The only drawback was it was sat; and way too many kids!

Really enjoyed our visit and it delivered more than we expected. The exhibits are outstanding and the attention to detail was amazing. Staff were very helpful and we learnt so much about the Railroad history. A must for visitors.

Really top notch museum. Super layout, great exhibits, very friendly staff who were always happy to inform and discuss. The guide dressed as an engineer in the massive steam loco was brilliant and knew his topics. Great place make sure you visit.

Don't miss the California Railroad Museum in Old Town Sacramento. With restored engines, dining and sleeping cars, the golden spike, a mail car, model trains, and more, there's something to interest everyone. Friendly, informative docents are located throughout, explaining points of interest and answering questions....More

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this train museum. The lower level had beautifully restored engines and specialty cars. It is an amazing collection. There were people walking around in period clothes who were very knowledgeable. The top floor has a area for children to...More

My grandpa loves trains! He's like a kid in a candy store here! You can drive a virtual reality train for free. Lot of real size trains here, you can jump aboard and see what it was like to dine on the train. Flashbacks to...More

Allow an hour or more for a good visit. You will need to be able to climb stairs to go aboard the trains.

This special museum and the train museum in York, England must be the best two railroad museums in the world today. There’s a truly outstanding collection of early transcontinental engines, carriages and other rolling stock in mint condition. Several trains are open and you can...More

Yes this museum is massive and all indoors. The area where the actual trains are is kind of like a huge garage/warehouse type of structure, but again it is all enclosed. I have visited more than once in the winter and don't... More

No, this museum is not a working railroad. However, the Amtrak to the bay is located about 1/2 mile from the Museum...and that will get you to/from SF in one day. Uber/Lyft from museum to Amtrak is only $7!
