We visited the library to gather information on relatives that lived in California during the gold rush. We viewed a variety of different records on microfiche, books, photographs and computer links. The staff was very helpful in providing us with all of these different resources. Just wish we had more time to spend here.

Library staff are so helpful and the collection has considerable information on California history and pioneers. Well worth your time if you are researching your genealogy in California.

Located in a couple of buildings, the most impressive is the one colocated with the Courts. It's architecture is an adaptation of classic Greek architecture style popular in the 1920s. You can schedule a tour (go to the California State Library's web site for info), or pickup a pamphlet and self-tour it. Don't miss the 3rd floor Gillis Hall reading... More

I've been able to make an appointment to take my class to view their wonderful collection historic California photographs. What an amazing resource right here in Sacramento. The staff is extremely knowledgable and accommodatiing when we've taken a field trip there. To see the collection, you have to make a reservation and have to be taken up the elevator to... More

We were there trying to locate any printed information on a family member. Unfortunately, didn't find much but it was not for lack of effort on the part of the library staff. We really appreciated their kindness and willingness to help in our quest.

A wonderful tour within a beautiful building. Recommend going on the website to schedule a tour with a docent.

The California State Library was recently renovated and should be called the California State Library and Courts Building. The decor is beautiful and contains may murals and other works of art. It is a working library and court house for the State Appalet court.

Take a tour of the library that way you will see everything that isn't open to everyone and not miss anything that is open. There are several floors to visit with different displays on the floors and books that you may look at. They tell you about the building and it's history as well as the collection. You can go... The State Library is just across the street from the CA State Capitol Building. Check the website and register for docent tours in advance. They have self-guided and virtual tours as well. I self toured the building with a friend. There maybe guided tours by docents at certain times, but I had enough time at lunch. The tour information is... More
