We loved this place! It is off the beaten path but well worth the trip. The wines are excellent, the grounds are beautiful, the tour is very interesting, and the staff are great (Johnna). Can’t wait to get our shipment!

I hadn't been to Chappellet before. They were able to squeeze me in when another guest canceled, so I made the drive over. It was a bit more remote than I anticipated. The drive up Pritchard Hill was narrow, winding, and hilly. The winery is a pretty fascinating piece of architecture, and helps to symbolize Chappellet's logo. My host was very nice and informative. She took me around the vineyards and then to a nice overlook area where you could see St. Helena off in the distance. The first few wines, part of their grower's collection, weren't really my thing, but their cab and cab franc were excellent.

My wife and I visited Chappellet on a recent trip to Napa, after it came up again and again when we asked for recommendations at other wineries on previous trips. We heard that the location was beautiful up on Pritchard Hill, and that the wine would be great as well. I would agree that the location on Pritchard Hill is quite nice, with some really good views, and our tasting experience itself was relaxed and enjoyable. However, the wine that was offered during the tasting didn’t really stand out to us for being as great as expected. I don’t understand why they don’t offer some of their best wine options to visitors.

Getting to Chappellet is a little difficult as compared to most wineries, since it’s located up winding roads up in the hills by Lake Hennessey. It probably takes a good 10-15 minutes after turning off of the Silverado Trail before you’ll reach the winery. I would also make sure to have the directions provided by the winery with you, since Waze thought we had arrived at Chappellet when we were at the boat launch area by the lake (and had calculated our ETA based on that), but we still needed to make a turn there and go up the hill for a few more minutes to reach Chappellet. There are several potential roads to turn onto by the lake, so just be careful not to go the wrong way.

The winery is set in a nicely wooded area, and the main winery building looks a little dated from the 60s or 70s (I thought it almost looked like a church, rather than a winery). We were only in there for a couple minutes to check in for the tasting, before our host Dimitri took us outside to sit outside near the vineyards.

The tasting was very laid back, at a picnic table with a great view of the famed Pritchard Hill, which is a key part of the history and current winemaking at Chappellet. Dimitri did a great job of introducing the area to us, as well as giving historical information on the choice to locate the winery here. We really enjoyed spending time with him and learning more about both Chappellet and wine in general, since he had a lot of interesting information to share based on his past experience as a sommelier.

For being one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Napa, I didn’t feel like the family itself was as much of a focus during our visit as it is at some other places. I’m used to walking out from a family-owned winery feeling like I practically know the family, but Chappellet had a slightly less intimate feel to it.

As we went through the tasting, I will say that I was a bit disappointed with the wines themselves, given all the buildup before coming here and so many glowing recommendations. The tasting started with two selections from the Chappellet Grower Collection, which to me is a bit of a waste. The Grower Collection features various wines from Sonoma County, from a variety of winegrowers that Chappellet wants to feature. Our tasting included Sangiacomo chardonnay from Carneros and the Fredrick Vineyard pinot noir from Sonoma Coast, and we weren’t impressed by either one. They were both fine, but nothing exciting, and we weren’t there to try wines from Sonoma from other growers. I felt like having more than one of the wines in the tasting from this collection was a little much.

After that, we tried the Chappellet 2018 Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon, followed by the 2017 cabernet franc. Both of these were much better than the Grower Collection options, and we liked the cab sauv the best, especially for the price. We thought it was a great value for $70 per bottle. At the end, we were also offered one additional bonus pour of the 2017 Las Piedras red blend, which was also quite good, and was our second favorite option. Neither of these were close to being a favorite wine that we’ve had in Napa, and weren’t as interesting as some of our favorite Napa wines, but we thought that they were simply good values and good for everyday drinking. We had a few bottles of each shipped home, with reasonable $25 flat rate shipping that we appreciated.

The main thing that I found disappointing about the tasting was that it didn’t include the famed Pritchard Hill cabernet sauvignon. I understand that this wine is only available to members through their allocation. However, with the amount of times it was discussed, and how much we’ve heard about it, I was expecting to have at least a taste of this wine, even if we wouldn’t be able to buy any without being a member. Most wineries seem to want to showcase their best wines in tastings, so I thought it was odd that this one was completely off limits to us, after paying $75 per person for the tasting. It also seems counterproductive to the goal of getting people to sign up for memberships to not even offer it. Maybe if we had tasted and fallen in love with the Pritchard Hill cab, we would have been more inclined to become members. I’d even rather pay more for a tasting if it included their best wines.

After completing our tasting, we took a short walk to see more of the property and get some pictures with a view of Lake Hennessey in the background. The lake views are very nice, but with the way things are set up, you’ll be more likely to spend your time looking at the Pritchard Hill vineyards from the base of the hill during the tasting (also very nice).

Overall, our tasting experience at Chappellet was good, and we had a very good time with Dimitri. He was a great guy and really nice to have met. The location on the famous Pritchard Hill was great to have visited in person, and we did find some wines there that we liked. However, the overall impression wasn’t as amazing as we had expected. We were really hoping we’d try a set of wines that blew us away based on the recommendations we had received, and that wasn’t how we felt. Chappellet doesn't seem to want to showcase their best work at tastings for the public, which was a bit disappointing.

Chappellet Winery is tucked away up in the hills and a little hard to find but worth the trip. Our tasting was done outside by the wine tanks and our server Nick was friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are delicious! We were with a couple who are members and so we bought some bottles that were shipped home to us free of charge. We were telling Nick about the restaurants we had reserved and mentioned how we couldn't get into Ad Hoc for dinner. He and another server somehow got us last minute lunch reservations at Ad Hoc on that same day! That was above and beyond our expectations that they would go out of their way for us. Amazing amazing experience.

I really enjoy Pritchard Hill wines (Continuum, Bryant, Brand) and thought that Chappellet would be equally as good. I was truly underwhelmed by the wines during the tasting. They lacked depth and consistency. Additionally, from our tasting it was apparent that the winery is pushing membership to the wine club. It was a major turnoff as we felt like we were be hustled to join a club when we didn’t like the wines. There are so many good and great wineries in the Napa Valley that I would go elsewhere.

What a treat. We had an amazing time doing a private tasting and a tour of a property. Dimitry really went out of his way and made the experience of the best ones we have had. Great Malbec, cab sauv, but what blew me away was the Cab Frank. The best one I have ever had. We will definitely be back.

Donn and Molly Chappellet were definitely on to something when they fell in love with Pritchard Hill back in the 60’s. Thanks to their labor of love, and the second-generation that followed, the Chappellet family has transformed this unknown Napa Valley area into one celebrated for its world-class Bordeaux varietal wines. There is no better place to enjoy these fine wines than the Meadow overlooking beautiful Lake Hennessey. It is hard to pick a favorite among our flight, but we especially enjoyed their iconic Signature Cabernet and the 2017 Cabernet Franc. What a lovely tasting. What beautiful wines. Thank you, Lindsey!

We made reservations for a tour and tasting at Chappellet Vineyard and Winery. The site is unique. The wine cellar ist special as is the vineyard. Our guide was knowledgeable and engaging. The wine is of very high quality. We felt we were treated very well.
