Nice playground, but not always safe

This park is mostly inhabited by the homeless. With the lightrail stops in the park, it is also used by drug dealers who can hop on and off the transport. The new children's... read more

A small Oasis in San Jose, used to be the central square for the city hall, jail and churches all fronted the park. Biggest claim to fame: the last public lynching (in California)occurred here in 1933 when John Holmes and Thomas Thurmond got dragged out of the jail across the street brought into the park and hanged from an Cork... Fresh air and lots of people having good fun with their dogs, surrounded with beautiful buildings, like the postal office and art decorations. The VTA is just great to arrive in for the free Wi-Fi.

Once a nice public space that has been transformed into a hobo mecca. I do not recommend that anyone strolls there alone after sunset. During the day it looks pleasant enough from a distance, as it is a sizable park and surrounded by pleasant architecture. Upon closer examination however, it is can be unsavory as the homeless, druggies and bums... More

From afar, it might look like a pleasant park to stroll through, but once you get inside you realize it's full of people using drugs and or trippin' on drugs. There is a playground where some families play, but mostly, I'd avoid it.

This park really needs to get cleaned up. It is located in downtown San Jose when many beautiful buildings are, but it is not safe. The playgrounds and tables are flithy. Homeless are sleeping all over the grassy area, and many undiserables just hanging out. Not a safe place for the kids to play, or have a nice lunch.

Saint James Park is a large green space with play ground area in San Jose area. It is close to high rise condos and central restaurant area of downtown San Jose. It is however also a haven for the homeless, which is ok. For tourists, I would choose another park in the San Jose area to go to however. Parking... More

Its true that there are homeless who sleep here; on the other hand, across the tram tracks are the historic and beautiful central post office, and the sandstone old courthouse. There is also a statue of Pres. Wm. McKinley and accompanying cannon aimed at the courthouse, which cannon, rumor has it, was once loaded and fired by pranksters at the... More

Back in 1933 Brook Hart--son of a wealthy local merchant--was kidnapped and killed. When the alleged perpetrators were caught, the outraged public stormed the jail, dragged them to St. James Park, stripped them naked, and hung them both. An enterprising person took photos of them swinging from the tree and made postcards of it, which sold locally for many years.... More

I grew up in San Jose and while looking over the list, I could not believe St. James park was listed. We drove by everyday on the bus and there were always at least 20 homeless people laying about as well as some people I normally would cross the street if I came across. I would NOT bring my children... More
