I visited this museum as part of the gargantuan LA/LA: Pacific Standard Time event organized by the Getty. Santa Barbara is a sleepy town full of retirees. However, the museum operates at a high standard. The exhibit I went to see was a mid-career retrospective...More

The museum as of this writing is currently undergoing renovations, so there is now one major exhibition along with a room containing their permanent collection. As I made my way to the entrance of the museum, a kindly docent approached me and invited me to...More

Maybe it was the exhibit during the day we visited as it was not to our taste. We were disappointed as only one floor was open and the permanent collection was extremely small.

What a find! This is a serious art museum. When you enter you see a Rodin sculpture. That is a good sign. Then you see Warhol, Picasso, Matisse, Monet, Hopper, etc...impressive works by the world's greatest artists. It is very impressive.

Went about a month ago. There is a lot of construction right now, so they are smaller than normal. However, the exhibits, as always, are incredibly well done. There are some exquisite pieces in this small museum! There was a special exhibit of Asian art...More

Much of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is closed while a massive enlargement process is underway, but that makes it just the right size for a short visit. Besides two or three short-term exhibitions, it features outstanding works from its permanent collection.
