I've been on steam trains here in the UK but this was a first in an open carriage and up a mountain. You can experience the journey with all your senses Great commentary. Decent food after the trip at a reasonable price. Loved it

Love a train and we tried both routes. Firstly from Felton to Santa Cruz and back. 3 hr round trip amazing to go along the boardwalk of Santa Cruz on such a big train. Then back for trip up the mountain on open train pulled...More

Our whole family took this trip one afternoon to see the redwood trees. I enjoyed the ride on a steam engine and the explanation of how it worked and the history of how this railroad came to be built. Then there was the beauty of...More

If you're expecting a rah rah sis boom bah experience, get ready to be disappointed. Instead, consider this a time to slow down and enjoy the scenic redwoods on a steam ride up a mountain. Steady and not speedy, you'll be navigated through some very...More

Don't forget your sun block (although the trees provide shelter) and take the open cars through the beautiful Sequoias. We took another tour once but in a closed car and this was hands down the best. The conductor here was knowledgeable and friendly as he...More

Such a great day activity for adults and kids! We did the ride through the Redwoods and loved every minute of it. Get tickets in advance. Show up about an hour early to do all the fun activities on the premises before boarding the train.

Good choice when traveling with children. The train ride through the redwoods is very pretty, and riding into downtown Santa Cruz, waving at passers by, is fun. The train lets you off right at the beach boardwalk. Unless you book an immediate return, you will...More

We rode the main steam engine and my boys loved it. My oldest is 5 but I would imagine a 7 year old would like it too.

I checked with my sources and found that you could ride both in the same day if you start in Felton first, ride the Bear Mt loop and then ride to Santa Cruz and back to Felton. These trains each have a different vibe.
