About
All of the wines produced by CrossHatch Winery are co-fermented blends sourced from Santa Barbara County vineyards. CrossHatch is a winery created in 2011 by winemaker Ryan Carr that focuses on co-fermented blends from Santa Barbara County vineyards. After making only single varietal wines for eleven years, winemaker Ryan Carr wanted to try something different. He and his wife Jessica came up with the idea for CrossHatch, inspired by the classic form of art. Cross hatching is an artistic technique that uses closely spaced intersecting lines to create shading, definition, and form in a drawing. Carr took this technique and adapted it into the winemaking process by harvesting multiple varietals on the same day then crushing and fermenting them together. Co-fermentation brings out and creates flavors in the wine that would not have existed otherwise. This makes the CrossHatch wine truly one of a kind. Visit the tasting room in Santa Ynez, CA for wine tasting and wines by the glass.

We walked up stairs to the 2nd floor of one of the iconic windmill buildings on Alisal, and were greeted by a charming, friendly, knowledgeable pourer. She offered their two hearty reds, both of which were so good we purchased a couple bottles. Not having even heard of CrossHatch, we were delighted to discover a new favorite.

We wandered into CrossHatch (after a delicious lunch at Birkholm’s bakery), wrongly assuming that it was a free wine tasting like they commonly are back home in Australia.

The tasting was USS$20 per person, or buy three bottles and get the tasting for free.

We enjoyed the fun atmosphere in the quaint windmill setting, and the service was very attentive.

There were five wines on the tasting menu from a limited number of cases and we particularly liked a couple of them.

After tipping, the cost was effectively AUD$66 for two glasses of wine, which is quite steep. However, the boutique experience more than made up for it 😊

We had a fun time stopping here! And for me, the Pros outweighed the Cons.

PROS - 5 STARS
1. Wine tasting room is inside a windmill (novel)
2. Outdoor patio is inviting and comfortable for wine tasting
3. Winemaker is knowledgeable, personable and friendly
4. Generous pours

CONS - 3 STARS
1. Wine is fine and acceptable, but not fabulous
2. We tasted 5 wines for $20, which seemed high compared to $15 in Los Olivos

The location is pretty cool...up in a windmill. The wines are very good! Tiny, quaint tasting room that should be high on your list.
