The Sausalito Ice House has a lot of history about it and it’s undergoing some form of interior renovation. Great little piece of property.

Very small museum with historical displays and artifacts related to Sausalito. You can pick up a visitor's map.

If traveling thru Sausalito, if you blink twice you will not see this small visitor center. You can get helpful information about the area from the workers inside.

BOTTOM LINE: We just loved Sausalito while visiting the San Francisco area. The Pace of life is much slower here and a stark contrast to San Francisco itself. This place is in its own little world. The downtown shops were fun to visit and perfect for a relaxing stroll. Wish we would have allocated more time to see even more of the toe, Perhaps on our next visit. There is something romantic about the shops, the friendly people and views here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. MY RATING: 9/10.

We wanted to visit Muir Woods but discovered that the free shuttle bus only ran at weekends out of season. Catherine at the visitors centre contacted a local mini bus driver, Penni, and an hour later we were on our way. It cost $20 per person each way and Penni waited whilst we walked the trails. Fabulous visit thanks to them both!

My husband and I visited the Museum on 21 June. Had previously visited 2 years ago and been very impressed and have recommended to family and friends visiting San Francisco. Opening time advertised as 11.30am but no-one arrived until 11.45am. I was standing by entrance in the shade as it was a very hot day. Lady who arrived pointed out the Closed sign and rudely spelt out C.L.O.S.ED as if i was an idiot. I replied that the opening time was 11.30am which was why I was standing near the entrance. She then told me to move out of the way and that it would take 5 minutes to disarm the alarms. Her manner was extremely rude and unprovoked. I have emailed the historical society complaining but have not received a response. I will no longer recommend this museum.

I mainly popped into the visitors center to grab and map so I would know where I could go in the brief time I had in Sausalito. The whole building is super small with just two room. The front room is the visitors center and the back room is a little museum about the history of the city. It was pleasant.

We really didn't need the visitors centre but we dropped in because it was there. Unlike Fisherman's Wharf Sausalito has a slower pace and a village feel to it. The visitors centre just has a serenity that seems to epitomise what goes on outside. We learned a few things from the helpful staff.
