Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of CanadaHistory will unfold before...

Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site of CanadaHistory will unfold before your eyes at this restored 19th century fort where costumed staff recreate the 1850s in the Red River Valley. Come and meet the Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company as he strolls through his garden, barter with the company clerk, sit in a tipi and listen to the whispers of ancient legends, and touch the coarse fur of a bison hide at the oldest stone fur trading post in North America – or, if you prefer, scour the fort for clues in a family scavenger hunt. There is something here for the whole family.Living-history programs run mid-May – Labour Day, 9:00 – 5:00 daily. Daily guided tours in English and French and motorized access for mobility challenged visitors available. Regularly scheduled tours are offered in September. Don’t forget to ask us about our Halloween and Christmas programs. The site is open to groups year-round for tours, weddings or meetings by pre-booking.

Visiting the site, which was beautiful, was greatly enhanced by all the young people in costume and character who lent an air of authenticity. I love that Canada provides these summer jobs!

Being big history buffs, my husband and I included Lower Fort Garry on our Honeymoon Road Trip and had a great time! I haven't been here since I was in grade school and it's only gotten better. The students really get into their rolls and know alot about the houses they are representing.

We enjoyed the tour. Guides were college students who really knew the history. Why wife and I loved the history lesson. The development of fur trade and the interaction of traders with the native population was very interesting. It was well worth the couple of hours involved.

About 30 minutes north of Winnipeg, but well worth it. The people are knowledgeable about the history and provide a good overview of the fur trade, settlement and the first nation people.

We spent 2-3 hours touring the Lower Fort Garry site. It is a great facility. We were there mid-week in June and there were not many other tourists on-site. There are a lot of young people dressed in period costume and telling you about their "life" at the Fort during its busy period. They did a good job and there... More

It was an enjoyable afternoon with so much to see inside and out about the history of this place! The price was worth it, and you need a few hours to get all of it in! Took lots of photos and the people were very knowledgable about the history and made having them dressed in the costumes and sharing the... More

We were only in the area for a couple of days and this was one of the attractions we chose. There weren't any tours when we were there but the actors answered most of our questions. Sad to see so few visitors there. There was even birthday cake for Queen Victoria. Definitely a must see when you are in the... More

I remember as a child coming for class trips. Now as an adult loved it just the same. They do serve food and near by towns have great eating places but I like packing a picnic. Feels like going back in time! Lovely summer day trip back in time.
