The Memorial State Park is interesting, considering what happened here (The Donner Party - cannibalism). It's attached to Donner Lake, which is a deep crystal blue with pine trees to the shores. It's excellent for boating, fishing (excellent for trout) or sun worshipping at one of the nice beaches. Water craft can be rented and you can explore the hidden... More

Newer visitor center/State Park Memorial all about the ill fated Donner Party. It is very well covered and tastefully done. Plenty of parking and a large statue in parking area will give you an idea of what conditions Donner Party faced. Also in this area are hiking trails and camping. There is a fee for parking but if you visit... More

The visitor center is very nice and has a lot of history of the ill fated group as well as other crossings and historical stuff. And it has a gift center. The statue is very big. And there is plenty of parking. And the area is great.

My mistake on thinking the attraction had something significant to offer on the Donner party trip. It had some stuff, but I was expecting more. I say either don't have a museum or do it better.

The State Park Memorial is a great place to visit. The film presentation was very informative, and gave a lot more background and insight into the ill fated party's demise. The visitors center is very modern and well kept. The displays are very nicely presented. The actual Donner Monument is beautiful and has lots of information on the plaque (behind)... More

Stopped here in March to see the depth of the snow. It amazes me what the depth was when the Donner Party tried to cross the Sierras. Was happy to see that the trail to the monument was plowed & there was ample parking. The museum was nice & informative. It has been given a brand new building.

Beautiful views of mountains and Donner Lake. Built a cabin on Donner Lake here in 1970s. Still a relaxing, quiet retreat area. Wish we still owned the cabin on the old Donner Estate! It is still equally beautiful in the summer but has more people.

The Welcome Center is very informative and even has diary entries on display from the Donner Family. Very well laid out and not only gave history on the Donner Pass, but also had information on the vegetation and the wildlife in the park. Well worth the stop!

The museum inside the building is a little weird and there's this huge focus on the cannibalism that is theorized to occur - check it out if you're interested because it is tastefully done. What we really enjoyed was the grounds - you can hike around the park and the area is really beautiful.

Suitable even for younger kids. To walk on snow, jump on frozen puddles. Collect pine cones. Kids had a lot of fun.
